  1. 1. Crystallization of the superconducting phase in unconventional superconductors

    Author : Patric Holmvall; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; pattern formation; spontaneous symmetry breaking; Andreev bound states; mesoscopic superconductivity; phase crystals; thin superconducting films; phase transitions; non-local Ginzburg-Landau theory; time-reversal symmetry; flat bands; unconventional superconductivity; quasiclassical theory; translational symmetry; cuprates; inhomogeneous superconductivity;

    Abstract : Superconductivity is a macroscopic quantum phenomenon, in the sense that a macroscopic number of electrons form a pair condensate, that occupies a single ground state. The electrons in this state are phase-coherent, breaking global U (1)-symmetry, and spatial variations of the phase imply superflows that usually cost kinetic energy, resulting in a uniform and rigid phase. 2. 2. Multi-Level Lossless Phase Modulation in Liquid Crystals for High-Speed Spatial Light Modulators

    Author : David Engström; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; phase measurements; polarization; phase modulation; beam steering; Spatial light modulators; diffractive optics; ferroelectric liquid crystals;

    Abstract : The spatial light modulator (SLM) is a compact device that enables highly precise control of light propagation with low drive voltages and no moving parts. By imposing a certain phase modulation onto the incident lightwave, functions such as multi-beam steering, beam shaping, and air turbulence corrections can be achieved in realtime. READ MORE

  3. 3. Building crystals out of crystals : Synthesis, structure and magnetic properties of iron oxide nanoparticles and self-assembled mesocrystals

    Author : Erik Wetterskog; Lennart Bergström; Markus Niederberger; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; iron oxide; nanoparticle; synthesis; self-assembly; characterization; electron microscopy; scattering; magnetic properties; Materials Chemistry; materialkemi;

    Abstract : This thesis is focused on the fabrication and characterization of self-assembled arrays of magnetic iron oxide (Fe3O4, γ-Fe2O3 and Fe1-xO) nanoparticles. The synthesis of spherical and cubic iron oxide nanocrystals, with sizes between 5 and 30 nm and narrow size distributions, is demonstrated, along with a rigorous morphological characterization of the cubic nanoparticles. 5. 5. Phase-field modeling of diffusion controlled phase transformations

    Author : Irina Loginova; KTH; []
    Keywords : phase-field; dendritic growth; grain boundary; Widmanstaetten plate; solidification;

    Abstract : Diffusion controlled phase transformations are studied bymeans of the phase-field method. Morphological evolution ofdendrites, grains and Widmanst\"atten plates is modeled andsimulated.Growth of dendrites into highly supersaturated liquids ismodeled for binary alloy solidification.
