11. Theoretical Studies of Surface Forces and Phase Equilibria
Abstract : The interaction between large hydrophobic and hydrophilic surfaces in aqueous solution is investigated, using Metropolis Monte Carlo simulations and density functional theory. Special attention is devoted to the solvation force and its dependence on the nature of the solvent-solvent and solvent-surface interactions. READ MORE

12. Phase Segregation and Microstructural Changes in Starch - Protein Systems
Abstract : This thesis presents the study of the phase behavior of starch ? protein systems in relation to their microstructure and mechanical properties. To study the complexity of this multicomponent system, the main components of starch (amylopectin and amylose) were studied separately in presence of a protein (ß-lactoglobulin or patatin). READ MORE

13. Equilibrium and Kinetic Studies of the Binding of DNA to Cationic Liposomes
Abstract : The objective of this work was to study the formation of DNA-cationic vesicle complexes (lipoplexes). These complexes are interesting not only from a fundamental point of view but also as promising candidates for gene therapy. The approach taken was to study first the cationic vesicles by themselves. 14. Carbide and MAX-Phase Engineering by Thin Film Synthesis
Abstract : This thesis reports on the development of low-temperature processes for transition metal carbide and MAX-phase thin film growth. Magnetron sputtering and evaporation, far from thermodynamical equilibrium, have been utilised to engineer the properties of the films by physical and chemical control. READ MORE

15. Structure Evolution during Phase Separation and Gelation of Biopolymer Mixtures
Abstract : This thesis focuses on the kinetics of phase separation and gelation in aqueous mixtures of gelatin and maltodextrin. The structure evolution of these mixtures at different length scales was recorded by confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The microstructure was quantified by image analysis. READ MORE
