  1. 1. Performance Assessment of Wastewater Treatment Plants : Multi-Objective Analysis Using Plant-Wide Models

    Author : MAGNUS ARNELL; Ulf Jeppsson; Bengt Carlsson; Hans Bertil Wittgren; Diego Rosso; Industriell elektroteknik och automation; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; benchmarking; BSM; samrötning; energieffektivitet; växthusgasutsläpp; livscykelanalys; matematisk modellering; avloppsvattenrening; benchmarking; BSM; codigestion; energy efficiency; greenhouse gases; life cycle assessment; mathematical modelling; wastewater treatment; benchmarking;

    Abstract : As the knowledge about anthropogenic impacts of climate change has grown, the awareness of the contributions from treatment of wastewater has widened the scope for wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). Not only shall ever stricter effluent constraints be met, but also energy efficiency be increased, greenhouse gases mitigated and resources recovered. READ MORE

  2. 2. Bacteria that escape predation : waterborne pathogens and their relatives

    Author : Karolina I. A. Eriksson; Agneta Andersson; Johanna Thelaus; Jon Ahlinder; David Sundell; Klaus Jürgens; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; bacterial pathogens; protozoa; predation resistance; aquatic microbiology; climate change; opportunists; humification; iron; environmental science; miljövetenskap; mikrobiologi; Microbiology;

    Abstract : The hidden presence of opportunistic bacterial pathogens in the environment evokes concerns about emerging diseases, especially in the light of climate change. The co-evolution of bacteria and their predators (protozoa) has led to bacterial defence strategies of which some contribute to the ability of bacteria to cause disease. READ MORE

  3. 3. Changes in the Freshwater System : Distinguishing Climate and Landscape Drivers

    Author : Fernando Jaramillo; Georgia Destouni; Zbigniew W. Kundzewicz; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Budyko; evapotranspiration; freshwater; hydrology; hydroclimatic change; landscape change; land use; observation data; runoff; separation; water partitioning; water storage change; water use; worldwide; Physical Geography; naturgeografi;

    Abstract : Freshwater is a vital resource that circulates between the atmosphere, the land and the sea. Understanding and quantifying changes to the partitioning of precipitation into evapotranspiration, runoff and water storage change in the landscape are required for assessing changes to freshwater availability. 4. 4. Land-Sea Interactions in the Coastal-Marine System of the Baltic Sea under Hydro-Climatic Variability

    Author : Yuanying Chen; Vladimir Cvetkovic; Carmen Prieto; Marco Marani; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Baltic Sea; nutrient loads; hydro-climatic variability; hydrodynamics; solute transport; water quality.; Land and Water Resources Engineering; Mark- och vattenteknik;

    Abstract : This thesis investigates a few important component processes for understanding and quantifying eutrophication in the Baltic Sea, that include characterization of nutrient loadings from land, water flow in the sea under changing climate conditions and transport of solutes originating from different locations along the coast. Furthermore, this study aims to improve our understanding on how processes from land (the nutrient loading conditions) and the sea (transport dynamics and water quality) couple to determine the fate of nutrients in the sea and the water quality in a selected localized coastal area, the Himmerfjärden Bay. 5. 5. Water Governance : Policy, Politics and Regulation in Honduras

    Author : Patricia Phumpiu; Jan-Erik Gustafsson; Cecilia Scharp; Jose Esteban Castro; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Water Governance; Honduras; Institutions; Policy; Politics; Regulatory Governance; Regulatory State; Water engineering; Vattenteknik;

    Abstract : Water governance exerts an impact on the socio-politic life of Honduras. For instance, the new legal framework changes institutions. New water organisations are created, and new processes and proceedings are proposed. READ MORE
