    Abstract : The intercellular material in bone is a nanocomposite of aligned “hard” inorganics—calcium phosphate (CaP) platelets embedded in the long-range ordered “soft” organic collagen matrix. This elaborate structural arrangement redeems the weaknesses of the individual components (being soft protein or brittle mineral) and gives bone its excellent mechanical properties for the protection and support of our bodies. Abstract : This thesis presents strategies for constructing multi-functional biomaterials based on hyaluronan (HA) derivatives for various biomedical applications, such as drug delivery, tissue regeneration, and imaging biomaterials. The aim of this study is to improve the functionalities of HA biomaterials as well as simplify the preparation procedures. READ MORE

  3. 3. Studies on nucleic acids chemistry

    Author : Nitin Puri; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Bioorganic chemistry; Bioorganisk kemi; Bioorganic chemistry; Bioorganisk kemi; bioorganisk kemi; Biorganic Chemistry;

    Abstract : This thesis is divided into three parts: Part 1: Synthesis and conformational analysis of cyclic RNAs, and comparison with lariat RNAs modelling the lariat formed during processing of Group II and Nuclear pre-mRNA. Synthesis of a hexameric lariat RNA model with a tetranucleotidyl "2' → 5' loop" and a dinucleotidyl "3'-tail" has been accomplished. READ MORE

  4. 4. Vanadate and Peroxovanadate Complexes of Biomedical Relevance : A speciation approach with focus on diabetes

    Author : András Gorzsás; Lage Pettersson; Carlos F. G. C. Geraldes; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Inorganic chemistry; vanadium; hydrogen peroxide; lactate; citrate; phosphate; alanyl serine; picolinic acid; speciation; formation constants; equilibrium; solution structure; potentiometry; NMR 51V; 31P; 13C; 1H ; Oorganisk kemi; Inorganic chemistry; Oorganisk kemi; oorganisk kemi; Inorganic Chemistry;

    Abstract : Diabetes mellitus is one of the most threatening epidemics of modern times with rapidly increasing incidence. Vanadium and peroxovanadium compounds have been shown to exert insulin–like actions and, in contrast to insulin, are orally applicable. However, problems with side–effects and toxicity remain. 5. 5. Towards synthesis of biologically important phosphate analogues : exploring H-phosphonate and C-phosphonate chemistry

    Author : Annika Kers; Robert Letsinger; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Organic Chemistry; organisk kemi;

    Abstract : This thesis is based on studies directed towards the development of methods for the preparation of phosphorus containing natural products, with the focus on C-phosphonate nucleic acid analogues.Mechanistic studies concerning formation of the phosphorus-carbon bond resulted in development of two efficient protocols for the synthesis of C-phosphonates from the corresponding H-phosphonate derivatives.
