  1. 1. Antimicrobial Peptide Interactions with Phospholipid Membranes : Effects of Peptide and Lipid Composition on Membrane Adsorption and Disruption

    Author : Adam A Strömstedt; Martin Malmsten; Georges Belfort; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; antimicrobial; peptide; adsorption; liposome; membrane; melittin; cholesterol; tryptophan; phospholipid; bilayer; PHARMACY; FARMACI; Pharmaceutical Physical Chemistry; farmaceutisk fysikalisk kemi;

    Abstract : The interactions between antimicrobial peptides and phospholipid membranes were investigated, in terms of lipid headgroup variations and the role of cholesterol, as well as peptide composition and structure. Also strategies for increasing proteolytic stability were evaluated. READ MORE

  2. 2. Interaction Between Antimicrobial Peptides and Phospholipid Membranes : Effects of Peptide Length and Composition

    Author : Lovisa Ringstad; Martin Malmsten; Per Hansson; Jeremy Ramsden; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Adsorption; antibacterial; antimicrobial peptide; bilayer; ellipsometry; electrochemistry; electrostatic interactions; hydrophobicity; liposome; membrane; monolayer; phospholipid; secondary structure; supported bilayer.; PHARMACY; FARMACI; Pharmaceutical Physical Chemistry; farmaceutisk fysikalisk kemi;

    Abstract : Due to increasing problems with bacterial resistance development, there is a growing need for identifying new types of antibiotics. Antimicrobial peptides constitute an interesting group of substances for this purpose, since they are believed to act mainly by disrupting the bacterial membrane, which is a fast and non-specific mechanism. 3. 3. Partitioning of Drugs and Lignin Precursor Models into Artificial Membranes

    Author : Elisabet Boija; Gunnar Johansson; Per Lundahl; Christine Lagerquist Hägglund; Marja-Liisa Riekkola; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Biochemistry; Bilayer disk; Capillary electrophoresis; Detergent; Drug; Electrostatic interaction; Hydrophobic interaction; Immobilized liposome chromatography; Lignin; Lignin precursor model; Liposome; Membrane model; Octanol water partitioning; Partitioning; Phospholipid; Phospholipid bilayer; Sterol; Biokemi;

    Abstract : The main aim of this thesis was to characterize membrane-solute interactions using artificial membranes in immobilized liposome chromatography or capillary electrophoresis. The partitioning of a solute into a cell membrane is an essential step in diffusion across the membrane. READ MORE

  4. 4. On the Formation of Supported Phospholipid Bilayers

    Author : Erik Reimhult; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; vesicle adsorption; formation kinetics; SPR; QCM-D; SPB; AFM; supported lipid bilayer; supported membrane; liposome;

    Abstract : Lipid bilayers are a central component of both the structure and function of biological membranes, like the one surrounding cells of living organisms. Since the lipid bilayer provides a host matrix for membrane proteins, which perform many of the specialized tasks in cells like energy, signal and material transduction, researchers have tried to develop artificial model membranes to study a variety of membrane protein functions. Abstract : The main objective of this thesis work was to gain understanding of the principles of biolubrication, focusing on synergistic effects between biolubricants. To this end surface force and friction measurements were carried out by means of Atomic Force Microscopy, using hydrophilic and hydrophobic model surfaces in salt solutions of high ionic strength (≈ 150 mM) in presence of different biolubricants.
