11. Reactive filter materials for ammonium and phosphorus sorption in small scale wastewater treatment
Abstract : Existing small scale wastewater treatment systems in Nordic countries have generally low treatment efficiency regarding phosphorus and nitrogen. Even though only 15% of the Swedish population is connected to on-site wastewater treatment systems, the total discharge of phosphorus from these systems exceeds the total discharge from all municipal treatment plants in Sweden. 12. Phosphorus transport and reduction in compact-bed filters : simulations and experiments
Abstract : Excessive release of phosphorus from the effluent of on-site sanitation facilities to the environment is one source of aquatic pollution. The primary effect of excess phosphorus in the aquatic environment is eutrophication. READ MORE

13. Recycling Filter Substrates used for Phosphorus Removal from Wastewater as Soil Amendments
Abstract : This thesis studied the viability of recycling filter substrates as soil amendments after being used in on-site systems for phosphorus (P) removal from wastewater. Focus was put on the materials Filtra P and Polonite, which are commercial products used in compact filters in Sweden. READ MORE

14. Phosphorus application strategies in potato : constraints and potential improvements
Abstract : Phosphorus (P) is an essential element that plays an important role in carbohydrate metabolism and energy transfer systems in all plants. Sufficient P supply is therefore essential for providing adequate food, fibre and fuel for society. In potato, P deficiency reduces yield and tuber number due to reduced radiation interception by the canopy. READ MORE

15. Environmental sanitation situation and solute transport in variably saturated soil in peri-urban Kampala
Abstract : The environmental sanitation situation in Kampala’s peri-urban areas was reviewed and investigated through field studies, structured interviews with personnel from key institutions and administration of questionnaires to households in a selected peri-urban settlement (Bwaise III Parish). In this settlement, specific field and laboratory measurements were undertaken so as to create a better understanding of the environmental sanitation situation, anthropogenic pollution loads and their transport and impact (with a focus on Phosphorus) in Kampala’s Peri-urban areas in pursuit of interventions for improving the environmental sanitation and protecting the shallow groundwater resource there.
