1. Surface Engineering of BiVO4-based Photoelectrochemical Cells for Water Splitting
Abstract : Photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting is a promising technology for converting solar energy into green hydrogen. The development of highly efficient, robust and cost-effective photoanodes has been established to be of essential importance for PEC water oxidation. READ MORE

2. Nanoplasmonic Enhancement of Photon-to-Electron Conversion in Functionalized Iron Oxide Photoanodes
Abstract : The ever increasing energy demand of modern society clashes with the accelerating depletion of the fossil fuels from which most of this energy is taken today. Moreover, fossil fuels consumption poses a severe threat on the Earth’s environment and climate through global warming. READ MORE

3. (Photo)electrochemical Water Oxidation: From Catalysis to Functional Device
Abstract : The key challenge within artificial photosynthesis is achieving efficient electro- or photo-driven water oxidation catalysis, a necessary process to supply the protons for the reduction reactions, thereby enabling solar fuel production. To facilitate efficient water (photo)electrolysis for solar fuel production, this thesis focuses on two aspects: 1) elucidating the O-O bond formation mechanism and developing efficient, stable, and economical water oxidation catalysts (WOCs); 2) exploring stable, low-cost, light-absorbing photoanode materials that have suitable band structures and excellent charge diffusion properties. 4. Non-Coherent Photon Upconversion on Dye-Sensitized Nanostructured ZrO2 Films for Efficient Solar Light Harvesting
Abstract : Photon upconversion by sensitized triplet–triplet annihilation (UC-STTA) is a photophysical process that facilitates the conversion of two low-energy photons into a single high-energy photon. A low-energy photon is absorbed by a sensitizer molecule that produces a triplet excited state which is transferred to an emitter molecule. READ MORE

5. Discovering Hidden Traps : in Nickel Oxide Nanoparticles for Dye-Sensitised Photocathodes
Abstract : The finite nature of fossil fuels and their effect on the global climate, raised the need to find an alternative source of energy. This source should be environment compatible, cheap and abundant. The light coming from the Sun is a promising alternative. READ MORE
