  1. 1. An Ultrafast Spectroscopic and Quantum-Chemical Study of the Photochemistry of Bilirubin : Initial Processes in the Phototherapy for Neonatal Jaundice

    Author : Burkhard Zietz; Tomas Gillbro; Jouko Korppi-Tommola; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Bilirubin; Phototherapy; Neonatal Jaundice; Femtosecond Spectroscopy; CASSCF; TD-DFT; Isomerisation Dynamics; Biophysical chemistry; Biofysikalisk kemi;

    Abstract : Bilirubin is a degradation product of haem, which is constantly formed in allmammals. Increased levels of bilirubin in humans lead to jaundice, a conditionthat is very common during the first days after birth. This neonataljaundice can routinely be treated by phototherapy without any serious sideeffects. READ MORE

  2. 2. Porphyrins and heme in microorganisms : Porphyrin content and its relation to phototherapy and antimicrobial treatments in vivo and in vitro

    Author : Jonas Fyrestam; Conny Östman; Jonas Bergquist; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Porphyrins; heme; phototherapy; antimicrobial resistance; singlet oxygen; photosensitizer; bacteria; HPLC-MS MS; oral bacteria; Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans; Porphyromonas gingivalis; Escherichia coli; Analytical Chemistry; analytisk kemi;

    Abstract : One of the greatest threats to human health is increasing antimicrobial resistance among pathogens, and finding alternatives for treatment of bacterial infections is of highest importance together with a more controlled use of antibiotics. Porphyrins and heme have both been shown to be a promising class of compounds for inactivation of bacteria; porphyrins by their excellent properties to act as a photosensitizer, and heme by its importance as an iron source during a bacterial infection in vertebrates. 3. 3. Vitamin D and Vitamin D-binding Protein in Psoriasis and Effects of Treatment

    Author : Maria Siekkeri Vandikas; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; psoriasis; vitamin D; vitamin D-binding protein; phototherapy; tumor necrosis factor α inhibitor;

    Abstract : Background: Topical vitamin D analogues constitute an established treatment for psoriasis but the role of vitamin D in the pathogenesis of the disease remains controversial. The in loco production and immunomodulatory effects of vitamin D need to be elucidated. READ MORE

  4. 4. Porphyrins and phototherapy of oral bacteria

    Author : Nadja Bjurshammar; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : In the mid-1990s researchers became interesting in blue light-based therapies using light-emitting diodes (LED) light. Blue light therapy has been successfully used in treatment of acne, as well as shown wound healing effects. It has also shown significant antibacterial effects, especially on black-pigmented bacteria. READ MORE

  5. 5. Routine procedures in the care of the full-term newborn

    Author : Miriam Pettersson; Mats H. Eriksson; Andreas Ohlin; Fredrik Ahlsson; Örebro universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Newborn; pain; neonatal hyperbilirubinemia; home phototherapy; neonatal hip examination; oral sweet solution; pain assessment;

    Abstract : This thesis presents four studies on routine procedures used in the care of the full-term newborn. The overall aim of the thesis was to study the effects of these routines and endeavour to find ways to improve them.Study I, an observational study, included 28 healthy newborns, assessing pain during neonatal hip examination.
