1. Human response to wind turbine noise : perception, annoyance and moderating factors
Abstract : Aims: The aims of this thesis were to describe and gain an understanding of how people who live in the vicinity of wind turbines are affected by wind turbine noise, and how individual, situational and visual factors, as well as sound properties, moderate the response. Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out in a flat, mainly rural area in Sweden, with the objective to estimate the prevalence of noise annoyance and to examine the dose-response relationship between A-weighted sound pressure levels (SPLs) and perception of and annoyance with wind turbine noise. 2. fMRI for mapping the plastic somatotopy of primary somatosensory cortex - Development and clinical applications
Abstract : Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) is a widely used tool for studying brain function in vivo. The technique is based on acquiring brain images sensitive to the physiological response following neural activation, and hence, allows brain activity to be examined and documented. READ MORE

3. Physiological aspects of cochlear excitation and neurotransmitter release
Abstract : Using an in vitro model of the guinea pig, the temporal bone preparation, cochlear physiology was studied. By perfusion of the scala tympani with oxygenated culture medium, the responses of the hearing organ to sound stimuli were maintained over several hours and the functional state was followed by monitoring the electrophysiological parameters cochlear microphonics (CM) and summating potential (SP). 4. Cardiovascular and metabolic effects of long-term traffic noise exposure
Abstract : Traffic noise is an increasingly common environmental exposure affecting large parts of the European population. Since the auditory system is directly linked to the sympathetic nervous and the endocrine systems, noise may induce a stress response, influencing several physiological, metabolic and immunological processes. 5. Novel Approaches for Application of Principal Component Analysis on Dynamic PET Images for Improvement of Image Quality and Clinical Diagnosis
Abstract : Positron Emission Tomography, PET, can be used for dynamic studies in humans. In such studies a selected part of the body, often the whole brain, is imaged repeatedly after administration of a radiolabelled tracer. READ MORE
