  1. 1. Trophic complexity of zooplankton–cyanobacteria interactions in the Baltic Sea : Insights from molecular diet analysis

    Author : Nisha H. Motwani; Elena Gorokhova; Jakob Walve; Catherine Legrand; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; bloom-forming filamentous cyanobacteria; diazotrophs; picocyanobacteria; zooplankton; grazing; molecular diet analysis; stable isotopes; biochemical indices; Marine Ecology; marin ekologi;

    Abstract : Blooms of nitrogen fixing cyanobacteria (NFC) occur in many freshwater and marine systems, including the Baltic Sea. By fixing dissolved nitrogen, they circumvent general summer nitrogen limitation, while also generating a supply of novel bioavailable nitrogen for non-diazotrophic primary producers and ultimately supporting secondary production. 2. 2. Molecular evidence for metazooplankton feeding on filamentous cyanobacteria and picocyanobacteria in the Baltic Sea

    Author : Nisha Motwani; Elena Gorokhova; Agneta Andersson; Jakob Walve; Karolina Ininbergs; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; marin ekologi; Marine Ecology;

    Abstract : Interactions between zooplankton and cyanobacteria are complex and system-specific. They play an important role in mediating responses of phytoplankton to changes in nutrient regime and top-down manipulations. READ MORE

  3. 3. Distribution and fate of polychlorinated biphenyls within the pelagic microbial food web

    Author : Petra Wallberg; Per Larsson; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biology; Biologi; zoologi; Zoology;

    Abstract : The composition and production of the plankton community in aquatic environments will in turn influence the food-web structure of larger predators, nutrient cycling, the sinking flux and, hence, the fate of hydrophobic organic contaminants. The aim of the research presented here was to study the distribution and fate of PCBs within the microbial food web, including bacteria, flagellates, ciliates, and phytoplankton. READ MORE

  4. 4. Picophytoplankton seasonal dynamics in the Baltic Sea

    Author : Javier Alegria Zufía; Hanna Farnelid; Catherine Legrand; Nathan Ahlgren; Linnéuniversitetet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; picophytoplankton; Synechococcus; picoeukaryote; phycoerythrin; phycocyanin; ammonium; nitrate; 16S rDNA; flow cytometry; grazing; viral lysis; seasonality; Akvatisk ekologi; Aquatic Ecology;

    Abstract : Picophytoplankton (15°C there was a preference for ammonium over nitrate. Clade A/B dominated the SYN community, except during summer at the coastal station when low nitrate and warm temperatures promoted S5.2 dominance. Grazing was observed to control SYN and PPE abundances and had an effect on the SYN community structure. READ MORE

  5. 5. Studies of Baltic Sea plankton - spatial and temporal patterns

    Author : Helena Höglander; Ulf Larsson; Christoph Humborg; Anna-Stiina Heiskanen; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Phytoplankton; Vertical distribution; Sedimentation; Baltic Sea; Cyanobacteria; Stable istopes; Cercopagis pengoi; Zooplankton; Terrestrial; freshwater and marine ecology; Terrestisk; limnisk och marin ekologi;

    Abstract : This thesis examines the spatial and temporal patterns of Baltic Sea phyto- and zooplankton. Studies of such patterns are important to gain a better understanding of the offshore nutrient dynamics of the Baltic Sea (Papers I and II) and how to manage eutrophication and invasive species in coastal areas (Papers III and IV).
