  1. 6. Animal husbandry in the Viking Age town of Birka and its hinterland : excavations in the black earth 1990-95

    Author : Bengt Wigh; Anne Karin Hufthammer; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; animal husbandry; domestication; Viking Age; Birka; cattle; pig; sheep; horse; dog; cat; fur trade; Boskapsskötsel; Kreaturshandel; Uppland; Birka; vikingatiden; Osteologi; historisk osteologi; Historical Osteology;

    Abstract : The Birka Excavations 1990-95 provided a unique opportunity to excavate a Swedish Viking Age town stratigraphically, allowing the finds - including extensive and well-preserved faunal remains - to be dated accurately. This in turn has given the opportunity to study the nature and development of Viking Age animal husbandry in a new, closer perspective. READ MORE

  2. 7. QTL Analysis in the Pig : From the Identification of Quantitative Trait Loci to the Understanding of Molecular Mechanisms

    Author : Ellen Markljung; Leif Andersson; Göran Andersson; Göran Hjälm; Stefan Marklund; Holger Luthman; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Domestic pigs have become very different form the wild ancestors they originate from. Selection for muscle growth and meat quality has made the pig a good model for genetic studies of muscle development.The first part of this thesis presents a genome-wide scan for quantitative trait loci (QTL) in a cross between Landrace and Hampshire pigs. 3. 8. Genetic Analysis of Quantitative Traits Using Domestic Animals : A Candidate Gene and Genome Scanning Approach

    Author : Hee-Bok Park; Leif Andersson; Stefan Marklund; Robert Fredricksson; Holger Luthman; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Genetics; Domestication; horse; pig; chicken; quantitative traits; candidate gene; genome scan; PRKAG3; MC4R; selection experiment; growth; correlated response; metabolic disorders; Quantitative Trait Loci; linkage; single nucleotide polymorphisms; Genetik; Clinical genetics; Klinisk genetik;

    Abstract : Domestication has led to genetic changes that affect quantitative traits in farm animals. Both candidate gene analysis using association tests and genome scans based on linkage analysis have been performed to understand the molecular basis underlying quantitative genetic variation in horses, pigs and chickens. 4. 9. Pulmonary ventilation and perfusion assessed by electrical impedance tomography - Experimental studies in pigs

    Author : Anneli Fagerberg; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : electrical impedance tomography; V Q matching; pig; endotoxinaemic ALI; ACE inhibitor;

    Abstract : Pulmonary ventilation and perfusion and ventilation/perfusion (V/Q) matching determine gas exchange in every lung unit in the healthy state and in the pathologically altered lung. Mismatch of V and Q lead to hypoxaemia and hypercapnia and monitoring of V/Q relations are thus important in critical illness. READ MORE

  5. 10. Regulation of the exocrine pancreas in growing pigs, with special emphasis on entero-pancreatic reflexes

    Author : Lena Evilevitch; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; kidney bean lectin; Animal physiology; Djurfysiologi; duodenum; entero-pancreatic reflex; insulin; lipas; amylas; trypsin; weaning; development; maturation; inhibition; CCK-receptors; Exocrine pancreas; CCK; pig;

    Abstract : The regulation of the exocrine pancreas has been under thorough investigation for many decades. In rats, cholecystokinin (CCK) is considered to be the major gut hormone stimulating the pancreas to releasing the digestive enzymes. READ MORE
