  1. 1. Diabetes in adolescent girls : Endocrine influences on metabolic control with special regard to the GHI/IGF-I Axis

    Author : Maria Halldin Stenlid; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Obstetrics and gynaecology; Insulin dependent diabetes; adolescent; growth hormone; insulin-like growth factor-I; insulin-like growth factor binding protein1; insulin sensitivity; pirenzepine; Obstetrik och kvinnosjukdomar; Obstetrics and women s diseases; Obstetrik och kvinnosjukdomar; pediatrik; Pediatrics;

    Abstract : Metabolic control frequently deteriorates during puberty in girls with IDDM, and is often accompanied by excessive weight gain. This impairment has been ascribed the peripubertal psychosocial as well as somatic changes. Puberty is characterised by a unique endocrine milieu. READ MORE

  2. 2. Cholinesterase inhibitors in Alzheimer's disease : an experimental study on mechanisms of interatcion with muscarinic and nicotinic receptors and neuroprotection

    Author : Anne-Lie Svensson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Alzheimer s disease Cholinesterase inhibitors Muscarinic receptors Nicotinic receptors Acetylcholine release Neuroprotection B-amyloid apolipoprotein E;

    Abstract : The overall aim of this thesis was to investigate the mechanisms beyond the interaction of cholinesterase inhibitors (ChEIs) with the cholinergic system in brain, with emphasis on their regulatory and mechanistic effects on subtypes of muscarinic and nicotinic receptors and neuroprotective properties. To investigate muscarinic receptor subtypes in frontal cortices of AD brains, the muscarinic antagonists pirenzepine, AF-DX 116, HHSiD, p-F-HHSiD and himbacine were used in receptor binding assays. 3. 3. Afferent input to midbrain dopamine neurones and its modulation : an electrophysiological study i vitro

    Author : Pernilla Grillner; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : dopamine neurones; synaptic transmission; NMDA receptors; L-type Ca2 channels; presynaptic inhibition; metabotropic glutamate receptors; muscarine; nicotine;

    Abstract : Dopamine (DA) neurones of the ventral mesencephalon are involved in the control of reward related behaviour, cognitive functions and motor performances, and provide a critical site of action for major categories of neuropsychiatric drugs, such as antipsychotic agents, dependence producing drugs and anti-Parkinson medication. The midbrain DA neurones are mainly located in the substantia nigra pars compacta (SNPC) and the ventral tegmental area (VTA). READ MORE
