  1. 1. The brain-pituitary-gonadal axis of the three-spined stickleback, Gasterosteus aculeatus

    Author : Yi Ta Shao; Bertil Borg; Sylvie Dufou; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; BPG axis; GnRH; lh-β; fsh-β; three-spined stickleback; Gasterosteus aculeatus; homeostasis; feedback; funktionell zoomorfologi; Functional Zoomorphology;

    Abstract : The seasonal reproduction of the three-spined stickleback is stimulated by long day photoperiod. As in other vertebrates, the reproductive system of stickleback is regulated by the brain-pituitary-gonadal (BPG) axis which is largely controlled by feedback effects. Both negative and positive feedback effects on the BPG axis have been found in fish. READ MORE

  3. 3. Growth hormone and somatolactin function during sexual maturation of female Atlantic salmon

    Author : Susana Benedet Perea; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Growth hormone; somatolactin; insulin-like growth factor I; GH; SL; IGFI; GHR; SLR; IGFIR; ovary maturation; reproduction; Atlantic salmon; spawning; pituitary;

    Abstract : Background and aims: The growth hormone-insulin-like growth factor I (GH-IGF-I) system is known to act during sexual maturation of female salmonids, but the specific roles are not known. Somatolactin (SL) is a pituitary hormone closely related to GH and is only found in fish. In some species, including salmonids, there are two forms, SLa and SLß. READ MORE

  4. 4. Primary Sjögren´s Syndrome. Clinical Studies with reference to Hormonal Status, Psychiatric Symptoms and Well-Being

    Author : Sigrídur Th. Valtýsdóttir; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Medical sciences; primary Sjögren´s syndrome; anxiety; depression; well-being; quality of life; hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid-gonadal axis; androgens; MEDICIN OCH VÅRD; MEDICINE; MEDICIN; Medicine; medicin;

    Abstract : Primary Sjögren's syndrome (pSS) is a chronic inflammatory connective tissue disease of unknown etiology. The disease primarily involves salivary and lacrimal glands which results in oral and ocular dryness (sicca symptoms). A wide spectrum of extraglandular features from various organs may be seen. 5. 5. Effects of endocrine disruptors on adreno-cortical and Leydig cell steroidogenesis

    Author : Vichit Supornsilchai; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Endocrine disrupting chemicals EDCs ; steroidogenesis; Leydig cells; adrenocortical cells; steroidogenic acute regulatory protein StAR ; steroidogenic enzymes;

    Abstract : A common sequential pathway for steroidogenesis, designed to produce steroid hormones, is expressed in the adrenal cortex, testes and ovaries. In this process, cholesterol is converted to all known steroids by specific enzymes in a tissue-specific manner. READ MORE
