  1. 1. Planetary Timemaking : Paleoclimatology and the Temporalities of Environmental Knowledge, 1945-1990

    Author : Erik Isberg; Sverker Sörlin; Sabine Höhler; Adam Wickberg; Etienne Benson; KTH; []
    Keywords : HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; paleoclimatology; environmental history; temporality; ice core; deep-sea core; North Atlantic; timemaking; theory of history; planetary-scale environmental knowledge; paleoklimatologi; miljöhistoria; temporalitet; iskärna; borrkärna; Nordatlanten; tidsskapande; historieteori; planetär miljökunskap; History of Science; Technology and Environment; Historiska studier av teknik; vetenskap och miljö;

    Abstract : This thesis concerns the history of paleoclimatology in the postwar period. It follows the trajectory of two climate proxy records – ice cores and deep-sea cores – in the North Atlantic region, from their emergence as scientific objects in the 1940s to their incorporation into Earth System Science in the 1980s. 2. 2. Thermal Conductivity of Materials under Conditions of Planetary Interiors

    Author : Zuzana Konôpková; Peter Lazor; Vitali Prakapenka; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; iron; high pressures-high temperatures; thermal conductivity; diamond anvil cell; laser-heating; planetary cores; Earth sciences; Geovetenskap;

    Abstract : The presented thesis focuses on study of transport and thermoelastic properties of materials under conditions of planetary interiors by means of high-pressure experimental tools and finite element modeling, and their role in the dynamics and states of cores of terrestrial planets. Experiments in laser-heated diamond anvil cell (LHDAC) in combination with numerical simulations of heat transfer in DAC are shown to yield information on thermal conductivity of a pressurized sample. 3. 3. Turbulence-Assisted Planetary Growth : Hydrodynamical Simulations of Accretion Disks and Planet Formation

    Author : Wladimir Lyra; Nikolai Piskunov; Thomas Henning; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; accretion; accretion disks; hydrodynamics; instabilities; methods: numerical; solar system: formation; planets and satellites: formation; magnetohydrodynamics MHD ; turbulence; diffusion; stars: planetary systems: formation; Astronomy and astrophysics; Astronomi och astrofysik;

    Abstract : The current paradigm in planet formation theory is developed around a hierarquical growth of solid bodies, from interstellar dust grains to rocky planetary cores. A particularly difficult phase in the process is the growth from meter-size boulders to planetary embryos of the size of our Moon or Mars. READ MORE

  4. 4. Numerical simulations of type III planetary migration

    Author : Adam Peplinski; Pawel Artymowicz; Garrelt Mellema; John Papaloizou; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; planetary system formation; Astronomy and astrophysics; Astronomi och astrofysik; Astronomy; astronomi;

    Abstract : Planets are believed to form in primordial gas-dust discs surrounding newborn stars. An important breakthrough in our understanding of planetary formation was the discovery of extra-solar planets around sun-like stars, especially the frequent occurrence of giant planets on close orbits (hot Jupiters). 5. 5. Dusty Globules and Globulettes

    Author : Tiia Grenman; Hans Weber; Erik Elfgren; Kalevi Mattila; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Applied Physics; Tillämpad fysik;

    Abstract : Interstellar gas and dust can condense into clouds of very different size, ranging from giant molecular cloud complexes to massive, isolated, dark cloudlets, called globules with a few solar masses.This thesis focuses on a new category of small globules, named globulettes. READ MORE
