  1. 1. Turbulence-Assisted Planetary Growth : Hydrodynamical Simulations of Accretion Disks and Planet Formation

    Author : Wladimir Lyra; Nikolai Piskunov; Thomas Henning; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; accretion; accretion disks; hydrodynamics; instabilities; methods: numerical; solar system: formation; planets and satellites: formation; magnetohydrodynamics MHD ; turbulence; diffusion; stars: planetary systems: formation; Astronomy and astrophysics; Astronomi och astrofysik;

    Abstract : The current paradigm in planet formation theory is developed around a hierarquical growth of solid bodies, from interstellar dust grains to rocky planetary cores. A particularly difficult phase in the process is the growth from meter-size boulders to planetary embryos of the size of our Moon or Mars. READ MORE

  2. 2. Formation and Early Evolution of Planetary Systems

    Author : Daniel Carrera; Astronomi - Genomgår omorganisation; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; planet formation; planets and satellites: dynamical evolution and stability -- planets and satellites: gaseous planets -- planets and satellites: terrestrial planets; planets and satellites: terrestrial planets;

    Abstract : Over the past 20 years we have discovered that exoplanets are common in the Galaxy, and are far more diverse than anyone expected. Half of all Sun-like stars are accompanied by at least one super-Earth (a planet with a size between Earth and Neptune), many planets have very high eccentricities indicative of a dynamical origin, and a small fraction of stars are accompanied by hot Jupiters, whose origin is poorly understood. 3. 3. Numerical simulations of type III planetary migration

    Author : Adam Peplinski; Pawel Artymowicz; Garrelt Mellema; John Papaloizou; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; planetary system formation; Astronomy and astrophysics; Astronomi och astrofysik; Astronomy; astronomi;

    Abstract : Planets are believed to form in primordial gas-dust discs surrounding newborn stars. An important breakthrough in our understanding of planetary formation was the discovery of extra-solar planets around sun-like stars, especially the frequent occurrence of giant planets on close orbits (hot Jupiters). 4. 4. Energy Transfer and Conversion in the Magnetosphere-Ionosphere System

    Author : Lisa Rosenqvist; Stephan Buchert; Andris Vaivads; Mike Lockwood; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Space and plasma physics; solar system; space physics; magnetospheric physics; plasma physics; magnetic storms; substorms; boundary layers; magnetic reconnection; energy conversion; space weather; Rymd- och plasmafysik;

    Abstract : Magnetized planets, such as Earth, are strongly influenced by the solar wind. The Sun is very dynamic, releasing varying amounts of energy, resulting in a fluctuating energy and momentum exchange between the solar wind and planetary magnetospheres. READ MORE

  5. 5. Cooling the Envelopes of Gas Giants : Accretion, structure formation and observability

    Author : Matthäus Schulik; Astronomi - Genomgår omorganisation; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Planet formation; Hydrodynamics; Giant planets;

    Abstract : We know now that discs of gas and dust, so-called protoplanetary discs, form planets as side-products of the naturally occurring star formation process throughout the Milky Way. Young, growing planets in such discs are commonly referred to as protoplanets. READ MORE
