1. Herbivory and plant community structure in a subarctic altitudinal gradient
Abstract : The object of this thesis was to study plant community structure, especially in relation to vertebrate herbivory, in an altitudinal gradient in the Fennoscandian mountain chain.A sowing experiment in a high alpine Ranunculus glacialis population showed that seeds germinated better in cleared microsites than under established individuals. 2. Seaweed Invasions and Novel Chemical Defences
Abstract : Biological invasions pose a risk to the biodiversity and the functioning of ecosystems in invaded areas. The reasons why some introduced species become dominant and widespread in their new environments is still largely an unsettled question. READ MORE

3. Mechanisms and genes controlling the signalling network for biotic and abiotic stress defences in Arabidopsis thaliana (L.) Heyhn : Functional cross-talk between photo-produced reactive oxygen species, photosynthesis and plant disease defence responses
Abstract : Excess excitation energy, mechanical injury and defence against pathogens, each trigger rapid production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in Arabidopsis thaliana leaves. ROS, such as hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), are required for the induction of systemic acquired acclimation and may lead to redox changes in photosynthetic electron transport (PET). READ MORE

4. Plant Inducible Responses to Damage: Evolution and Ecological Implications
Abstract : Abstract Inducible plant responses to damage, i.e. inducible defence responses and compensatory growth responses, are theoretically examined in an evolutionary and ecological context. Inducible defences are generally considered to be beneficial under conditions of low risk of herbivory and when initial damage is moderate. READ MORE

5. Black mustard and the butterfly effect : metabolomics of plant-insect interactions under multiple stress conditions
Abstract : One main goal of ecological research is to understand nature´s complexity, in order to predict the potential impact of environmental perturbations. In this thesis, I investigate the ecological interactions between some of the most ancient organisms living on our planet: plants and insects. READ MORE
