  1. 1. Plant-Herbivore Interactions and Evolutionary Potential of Natural Arabidopsis lyrata Populations

    Author : Adriana Puentes; Jon Ågren; Jenny Hagenblad; Roosa Leimu Brown; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; plant defenses; leaf herbivory; floral herbivory; ontogeny; G-matrix; trade-offs; Biology with specialization in Ecological Botany; Biologi med inriktning mot ekologisk botanik; Biology with specialization in Evolutionary Genetics; Biologi med inriktning mot evolutionär genetik;

    Abstract : In this thesis, I combined field, greenhouse and common-garden experiments to examine the ecological and evolutionary consequences of plant-herbivore interactions and the genetic architecture of fitness-related traits in the insect-pollinated, self-incompatible, perennial herb Arabidopsis lyrata. More specifically, I examined (1) whether damage to leaves and inflorescences affects plant fitness non-additively, (2) whether trichome production is associated with a cost in terms of reduced tolerance to leaf and inflorescence damage, (3) whether young plant resistance to a specialist insect herbivore varies among populations, and (4) whether the evolution of flowering time, floral display and rosette size is constrained by lack of genetic variation or by genetic correlations among traits. 2. 2. Interactions between gray-sided voles (Clethrionomys rufocanus) and vegetation in the Fennoscandian tundra

    Author : Jonas Dahlgren; Lauri Oksanen; Johan Olofsson; John Terborgh; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; gray-sided voles; tundra vegetation; trophic cascades; plant-herbivore interactions; bilberry; plant communities; herbivory; plant resistance; Terrestrial ecology; Terrestisk ekologi;

    Abstract : I have, in this thesis, studied the interactions between gray-sided voles (Clethrionomys rufocanus) and tundra vegetation, on islands in, and mainland sites close to the lake Iešjávri, in northern Norway. As isolated islands are virtually free of predation, I have been able to compare plant-herbivore interactions in the presence and absence of predators. READ MORE

  3. 3. Molecular population genetics of inducible defense genes in Populus tremula

    Author : Carolina Bernhardsson; Stefan Jansson; Santiago González-Martinez; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Populus; herbivore defense; adaptation; population genetics; population structure; association mapping; complex traits; evolutionär genetik; evolutionary genetics;

    Abstract : Plant-herbivore interactions are among the most common of ecological interactions. It is therefore not surprising that plants have evolved multiple mechanisms to defend themselves, using both constitutive chemical and physical barriers and by induced responses which are only expressed after herbivory has occurred. 4. 4. On Security in Safety-Critical Process Control

    Author : Johan Åkerberg; Mats Björkman; Maria Lindén; Bengt Ahlgren; Mälardalens högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Computer and systems science; Data- och systemvetenskap; Computer Science; datavetenskap;

    Abstract : This Licentiate thesis is about security in automation networks with emphasis on fieldbus communication. In the process industry, network and system security have become even more important since the introduction of Ethernet-based fieldbus protocols. READ MORE

    Author : Åsa Berglund; Erik Nyholm; John Elliott; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURVETENSKAP; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Toxicology; Toxikologi; Other biology; Övrig biologi; ekotoxikologi; Ecotoxicology; zooekologi; Animal Ecology; Environmental Science; miljövetenskap;

    Abstract : Metals have been used by humans for thousands of years, and this has resulted in increased concentrations in the biosphere. The environment around point-sources, such as mines and smelters, are of particular concern, as metals may accumulate to high concentrations, and potentially reach levels toxic to the local flora and fauna.
