  1. 21. Aquaporin homologues in Norway spruce (Picea abies)

    Author : Peter Oliviusson; David I. Dunstan; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Plant physiology; Växtfysiologi; växtfysiologi; Plant Physiology;

    Abstract : The recent discovery of aquaporins - proteins that mediate bidirectional passage of water over membranes - provides a molecular basis for the underlying processes in plant water relations. In plants, aquaporins are found in plasma membranes and in vacuolar membranes (tonoplasts) and are suggested to participate in dynamic operations such as cell elongation, osmotic regulation, and long-distance transport. 2. 22. Molecular Mechanisms Optimizing Photosynthesis during High Light Stress in Plants

    Author : Lan Yin; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Arabidopsis; light stress; photosynthesis; chloroplast;

    Abstract : Oxygenic photosynthesis is the process by which plants, algae and cyanobacteria use solar energy to convert water and carbon dioxide into molecular oxygen and carbohydrates. Photosynthesis sustains life on Earth since it provides not only energy for individual growth, but also represents the starting point of the food chain for most living organisms. READ MORE

  3. 23. Functional genomics of the Baltic Sea cyanobacterium Nodularia spumigena in relation to nitrogen fixation, heterocyst differentiation and toxin production

    Author : Simina Vintila; Rehab El-Shehawy; Peter Lindblad; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; cyanobacteria; Nodularia; nitrogen fixation; heterocyst; nitrogenase; ammonium; phosphate; nodularin; Baltic Sea; Plant physiology; Växtfysiologi; Plant Physiology; växtfysiologi;

    Abstract : Nodularia spumigena is a filamentous, heterocystous cyanobacterium that dominates the annual, toxic cyanobacterial blooms in the Baltic Sea. The blooms are believed to have increased in recent years, due to eutrophication by phosphate and/or nitrogen. Toxicity of these blooms is well-documented and attributed to the hepatotoxin nodularin. 4. 24. Towards an understanding of diazocyte development and diazotrophy in the marine cyanobacterium Trichodesmium

    Author : Gustaf Sandh; Birgitta Bergman; Rehab El-Shehawy; Louis Sherman; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Cyanobacteria; Trichodesmium; diazocyte; cell differentiation; nitrogen fixation; cell division; flavodoxin; Plant physiology; Växtfysiologi; Plant Physiology; växtfysiologi;

    Abstract : Trichodesmium is a filamentous cyanobacterium of great ecological significance as it contributes significantly to primary production in oceans through an efficient nitrogen fixation strategy, including a unique cell type, the diazocyte. The aim of this thesis was to generate a deeper understanding of the structural and molecular background related to the development of diazocytes and the maintenance of diazotrophy in Trichodesmium erythraeum IMS101. Abstract : Forests in Sweden are undergoing rapid and considerable changes regarding both management methods and environmental conditions. To understand the effects of these changes and to be able to predict impending changes in forest ecosystems, a holistic understanding of the processes governing the ecosystem is needed. READ MORE
