  1. 6. Iron nutrition dynamics - Differences between calcicole and calcifuge plants

    Author : Angelika Zohlen; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; 10-phenanthroline; 1; chlorophyll; plaque; root; leaf; immobilization; plants; calcifuge; Iron; calcicole; Plant ecology; Växtekologi;

    Abstract : One third of the earth´s soils is calcareous. Calcifuge plants are excluded from these soils, and one of the main causes is Fe deficiency, as Fe solubility in calcareous soil is very low. A lack of Fe lowers chlorophyll content, visible as yellowing of leaves, called chlorosis. READ MORE

  2. 7. Natural products from Bolivian plants

    Author : José Vila; Centrum för analys och syntes; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Organisk kemi; Organic chemistry; lichens; Secondary metabolites; Bolivian plants;

    Abstract : Bolivia has the most varied ecology in South America - the Amazonas rainforests, the dry forests of the Chaco, the mist forests, the punas and high Andean vegetation. Some general studies have been carried out on useful plants; traditional medicine has been practiced in parts of region for thousands of years, recognized and accepted for treatment of various diseases. 3. 8. The impact of cormorant nesting colonies on plants and arthropods

    Author : Gundula S. Kolb; Peter Hambäck; Lenn Jerling; Post David; Stockholms universitet; []

    Abstract : Seabirds concentrate large amounts of marine nutrients on their nesting islands. This nutrient input can have large consequences for island food webs and community structure. The high nutrient load may also cause runoff into surrounding waters and affect marine communities. READ MORE

  4. 9. Secondary Metabolites from Mozambican Plants

    Author : Julião Monjane; Centrum för analys och syntes; []
    Keywords : Secondary metabolites; Mozambique; Medicinal plants; Isolation; Structural elucidation; Antileishmanial activity;

    Abstract : Products derived from different natural sources have been used for thousands of years by human beings for their everyday needs. Out of these natural sources, plants were the most affordable. Plant-derived products were used for shelter, food, and as medicines. READ MORE

  5. 10. Pollen Competition as a Target for Sexual Selection in Plants

    Author : Åsa Lankinen; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Sexual selection; Pollen tube growth rate; Pollen selection models; Pollen interactions; Pollen competition; Plants; Phenotypic plasticity; Non-random mating; Genotype by environment interactions; Mate choice; Viola tricolor.; Plant ecology; Växtekologi;

    Abstract : According to the theory of sexual selection, traits can evolve because they confer a mating advantage in competition with members from the same sex. In animals, sexual selection is considered as an important evolutionary force. In this thesis I have investigated the potential for sexual selection in plants. READ MORE
