  1. 11. The Microcirculation in Trauma and Sepsis

    Author : Peter Bansch; Anestesiologi och intensivvård; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; microcirculation; prostacyclin; plasma vilume; trauma; sepsis; sidestream darkfield imaging; albumin; volume expansion; transcapillary escape rate; glycocalyx; charge;

    Abstract : The microcirculation plays a vital part for fluid-, gas- and solute-exchange, and changes in permeability during trauma or sepsis, that are in part necessary for the natural healing process, may also cause hypovolemia and edema formation, leading to disturbances in microvascular exchange. This thesis discusses changes is microvascular flow, permeability and plasma volume (PV) loss after experimental or surgical trauma and experimental sepsis. READ MORE

  2. 12. Porous polymeric materials for chromatography : Synthesis, functionalization and characterization

    Author : Emil Byström; Knut Irgum; Camilla Viklund; Solomon Tesfalidet; Klaus K Unger; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; porous polymer monolith; pore size distribution; nitrogen sorptiometry; mercury intrusion porosimetry; scanning and transmission electron microscopy; plasma functionalization; Analytical chemistry; Analytisk kemi; Separation methods; Separationsmetoder; Polymer chemistry; Polymerkemi; analytisk kemi; Analytical Chemistry;

    Abstract : Background: Separation science is heavily reliant on materials to fulfill ever more complicated demands raised by other areas of science, notably the rapidly expanding molecular biosciences and environmental monitoring. The key to successful separations lies in a combination of physical properties and surface chemistry of stationary phases used in liquid chromatographic separation, and this thesis address both aspects of novel separation materials. 3. 13. Cation adsorption properties of substituted kraft fibres : an experimental and thermodynamic modelling study

    Author : Ola Sundman; Lars-Olof Öhman; Per Persson; Janne Laine; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Kraft fibres; Donnan equilibria; ion exchange; acid base properties; potentiometric titrations; thermodynamic modelling; NPEs; GaAl12 7 ; EXAFS; Chemistry; Kemi;

    Abstract : Acid/base and metal ion adsorption properties have been investigated for a range of chemically modified bleached Kraft fibre materials (pulps). The studies were performed via potentiometric titrations, Flame Atomic Absorbtion (and Emission) Spectroscopy, Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectroscopy and Extended X-ray Absorbtion Fine Structure measurements. 4. 14. Beyond scattering – what more can be learned from pulsed keV ion beams?

    Author : Svenja Lohmann; Daniel Primetzhofer; Andreas Wucher; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Charge exchange; Deep UV photons; Electron emission; Silicon; Sputtering; TOF-MEIS; Fysik; Physics;

    Abstract : Interactions of energetic ions with matter govern processes as diverse as the influence of solar wind, hadron therapy for cancer treatment and plasma-wall interactions in fusion devices, and are used for controlled manipulation of materials properties as well as analytical methods. The scattering of ions from target nuclei and electrons does not only lead to energy deposition, but can induce the emission of different secondary particles including electrons, photons, sputtered target ions and neutrals as well as nuclear reaction products. 5. 15. Sperm Membrane Channels, Receptors and Kinematics : Using boar spermatozoa for drug toxicity screening

    Author : Alejandro Vicente Carrillo; Heriberto Rodríguez-Martínez; Karl-Eric Magnusson; Rudolf Rigler; Vesa Loitto; Stefan Arver; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; Plasma membrane; membrane channels; membrane receptors; kinematics; 3Rprinciples; spermatozoa; boar.;

    Abstract : Internal fertilization usually implies that a spermatozoon, with intact attributes for zygote formation, passes all hurdles during its transport through the female genitalia and reaches the oocyte. During this journey, millions to billions of other spermatozoa perish. READ MORE
