  1. 1. Look-ahead control for fuel-efficient and safe heavy-duty vehicle platooning

    Author : Valerio Turri; Karl H. Johansson; Petros Ioannou; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; platoon; platooning; optimization; optimal control; model predictive control; automatic control; fuel efficiency; intelligent transport systems; automated driving; cooperative; dynamic programming; trucks; heavy-duty vehicles; safe platooning; fuel-efficient platooning; distributed model predictive control; MPC; vehicle-following; pulse and glide; Vehicle and Maritime Engineering; Farkostteknik;

    Abstract : The operation of heavy-duty vehicles at small inter-vehicular distances, known as platoons, lowers the aerodynamic drag and, therefore, reduces fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. Tests conducted on flat roads have shown the potential of platooning to reduce the fuel consumption of about 10%. READ MORE

  2. 2. Modelling and Lagrangian control of mixed traffic: platoon coordination, congestion dissipation and state reconstruction

    Author : Mladen Čičić; Karl Henrik Johansson; Miroslav Krstić; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; traffic control; Lagrangian control; mixed traffic models; Intelligent Transportation Systems; Connected and Automated Vehicles; traffic congestion; platoon coordination; moving bottlenecks; bottleneck decongestion; stop-and-go wave dissipation; traffic state reconstruction; Electrical Engineering; Elektro- och systemteknik;

    Abstract : Traffic congestion is a constantly growing problem, with a wide array of negative effects on the society, from wasted time and productivity to elevated air pollution and reduction of safety. The introduction of connected, autonomous vehicles enables a new, Lagrangian paradigm for sensing andcontrolling the traffic, by directly using connected vehicles inside the traffic flow, as opposed to the classical, Eulerian paradigm, which relies on stationary equipment on the road. 3. 3. Strategic Decision-Making in Platoon Coordination

    Author : Alexander Johansson; Jonas Mårtensson; Yafeng Yin; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Platooning; automated highway systems; intelligent transportation systems; coordination; game theory; optimization; Electrical Engineering; Elektro- och systemteknik;

    Abstract : The need for sustainable transportation solutions is urgent as the demand for mobility of goods and people is expected to multiply in the upcoming decades. One promising solution is truck platooning, which shows great potential in reducing the fuel consumption and operational costs of trucks. READ MORE

  4. 4. Fuel-Efficient Heavy-Duty Vehicle Platoon Formation

    Author : Kuo-Yun Liang; Karl Henrik Johansson; Jonas Mårtensson; Carlos Canudas-de-Wit; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Electrical Engineering; Elektro- och systemteknik;

    Abstract : There is a need for intelligent freight transport solutions as the demand for road freight transport is continuously increasing while carbon footprint needs to be significantly reduced. Heavy-duty vehicle (HDV) platooning is one potential solution to partially mitigate the environmental impacts as well as to reduce fuel consumption, improve traffic safety, and increase traffic throughput on congested highways. 5. 5. Control of vehicle platoons and traffic dynamics : catch-up coordination and congestion dissipation

    Author : Mladen Čičić; Karl H. Johansson; Daniel Work; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Traffic Congestion; Intelligent Transport Systems; Moving Bottlenecks; Platoon Coordination; Electrical Engineering; Elektro- och systemteknik;

    Abstract : Traffic congestion is a constantly growing problem, with a wide array ofnegative effects on the society, from wasted time and productivity to elevated air pollution and increased number of accidents. Classical traffic control methods have long been successfully employed to alleviate congestion, improving the traffic situation of many cities and highways. READ MORE
