1. Coordinated control of Multi-Stage Inventory System
Abstract : This thesis is based on three scientific papers dealing with different models for coordinated control of multi-stage inventory systems. The ability to control multi-echelon inventory systems, is paramount for reducing tied up capital and inventory costs in large distribution systems. READ MORE

2. Hamiltonian systems with Poisson commuting integrals
Abstract : The purpose of this thesis is to study Hamiltonian systems with Poisson commuting integrals near a stationary point - a situation appearing in many problems of classical mechanics. It turns out that these integrals, under fairly general conditions on their quadratic parts, become singular (their gradients become linearly dependent) on symplectic submanifolds, giving rise to invariant manifolds for the Hamiltonian system - the singular manifolds. 3. Techniques to Calculate Exact Inclusion Probabilities for Conditional Poisson Sampling and Pareto .pi.ps Sampling Designs
Abstract : This thesis consists of five papers and treats two finite population sampling methods, viz. the Conditional Poisson and the Pareto .pi.ps sampling schemes. READ MORE

4. Electrostatic Interactions in Complex Liquids : A Thermodynamic Analysis Based on the Poisson-Boltzmann Equation and the Flexible Surface Model
Abstract : The aim of this study was to analyse physico-chemical properties of some complex liquids using the Poisson-Boltzmann (PB) cell model; to extend the theory to cover bilayer systems with complex global geometry; finally to apply this new extended model to such bilayer systems. The PB cell model provides a practical tool to examine counterion association and phase behaviour for structures of simple geometries; cylindrical and spherical. READ MORE

5. Diffusion studies in gels using holographic laser interferometry
Abstract : This thesis is an investigation of the potential of holographic laser interferometry for the study of diffusion of both small solutes and macromolecules. An investigation on the importance of errors due to light deflection in refarctive index gradients showed that the magnitude of the refractive index gradients were negligible for the system investigated.
