1. Localization effects in ternary nitride semiconductors
Abstract : InGaN based blue and near-ultraviolet light emitting diodes and laser diodes have been successfully commercialized for many applications such as general lighting, display backlighting and high density optical storage devices. Despite having a comparably high defect density, these devices are known for their efficient operation, which is attributed to localization in potential fluctuations preventing carriers from reaching the centers of nonradiative recombination. 2. Hydrogen in nominally anhydrous silicate minerals : Quantification methods, incorporation mechanisms and geological applications
Abstract : The aim of this thesis is to increase our knowledge and understanding of trace water concentrations in nominally anhydrous minerals (NAMs). Special focus is put on the de- and rehydration mechanisms of clinopyroxene crystals in volcanic systems, how these minerals can be used to investigate the volatile content of mantle rocks and melts on both Earth and other planetary bodies (e. 3. Scanning Tunneling Microscopy Induced Luminescence Studies of Semiconductor Nanostructures
Abstract : This thesis treats scanning tunneling luminescence (STL) investigations of semiconductor nanostructures. The STL technique combines scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) with detection of photons, induced by the tunneling electrons. The high spatial resolution in STM and the local excitation allow for optical investigations on the nanometer-scale. READ MORE

4. Recognition and Visualization of Nucleic Acids
Abstract : The work presented in this Thesis focuses on the interaction between nucleic acids and small molecules, as well as binding or incorporation of reporter chromophores into nucleic acids. The results could help in studying and understanding processes that are fundamental to describe mechanisms behind a genetic disorder. READ MORE

5. Electronic structure and optical properties of InGaAs and InAsP semiconductor quantum wires
Abstract : In recent years intensive studies of semiconductor nanostructures or so-called semiconductor quantum structures have been performed in many research groups around the world. The research interest in quantum structures arises both from their potential to expose new physical phenomena in condensed matter physics, allied with fundamental quantum mechanical effects, and from their potential application in electronic and optoelectronic devices.
