6. Wastewater treatment in constructed wetlands : Effects of vegetation, hydraulics and data analysis methods
Abstract : Degradation of water resources has become one of the most pressing global concerns currently facing mankind. Constructed Wetlands (CWs) represent a concept to combat deterioration of water resources by acting as buffers between wastewater and receiving water bodies. READ MORE

7. Bark and charcoal filters for greywater treatment : pollutant removal and recycling opportunities
Abstract : Water scarcity, inappropriate sanitation and wastewater pollution are critically important global issues. Greywater is a sustainable water source for recycling, so this thesis examined simple, robust, low-cost alternatives for on-site treatment of greywater to irrigation water quality. READ MORE

8. Algal-Bacterial Photobioreactors for the Degradation of Toxic Organic Pollutants
Abstract : The aerobic biodegradation of toxic organic volatile contaminants is always limited by the low aqueous solubility of O2. Therefore, intensive bubbling or surface aeration is required to supply the bacterial community with sufficient O2 to carry out pollutant mineralization. This can cause the hazardous volatilization of toxic volatile contaminants. READ MORE

9. Optimizing processes for biological nitrogen removal in Nakivubo wetland, Uganda
Abstract : The ability of Nakivubo wetland (which has performed tertiary water treatment for Kampala city for the past 40 years) to respond to pollution and to protect the water quality of Inner Murchison Bay of Lake Victoria was investigated. The aim of this study was to assess the capacity of Nakivubo wetland to remove nitrogen from the wastewater after its recent encroachment and modification, in order to optimize biological nitrogen removal processes using constructed wetland technology. 10. Heavy metal removal by floating treatment wetlands: Plant selection
Abstract : Elevated levels of heavy metals and chloride are commonly found in stormwater, as a consequence of pollution from traffic, building material and industries, and the use of salt for deicing in wintertime. Floating treatment wetlands (FTWs), consisting of vegetated rafts that can be placed in stormwater ponds, may be able to reduce heavy metal and chloride concentrations, but until this date have mainly been used for nutrient removal in warm climates.
