  1. 1. Reproduction and survival in the lesser spotted woodpecker. Effects of life history, mating system and age

    Author : Ulf Wiktander; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Picoides minor; Dendrocopos minor; Picidae; polygyny; polyandry; parental care; breeding biology; altricial birds; birds; single-brooded birds; Animal ecology; Djurekologi;

    Abstract : Over 9 years, 116 breeding attempts made by individually marked lesser spotted woodpeckers (Dendrocopos minor) were followed in a study area in southern Sweden. The home-range area decreased from on average 742 ha in winter to a defended territory of 103 ha prior to breeding and 43 ha during nesting. READ MORE

  2. 2. Behaviour of Pine Sawflies in Relation to Pheromone-Based Pest Management

    Author : Fredrik Östrand; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Animal ecology; effective sampling area; mark-release-recapture; climate; longevity; sampling range; Symphyta; Hymenoptera; monitoring; dispersal; polyandry; mating disruption; integrated pest management; behaviour; sex pheromone; Neodiprion sertifer; Diprionidae; Djurekologi; Zoology; Zoologi; Silviculture; forestry; forestry technology; Skogsvetenskap; skogsbruk; skogsteknik;

    Abstract : Pine sawflies (Hymenoptera: Diprionidae) are severe pine defoliators. This thesis investigated sawfly behaviour related to the use of pheromones in integrated pest management, including monitoring with pheromone traps and mating disruption. READ MORE

  3. 3. Polyandry and the evolution of reproductive divergence in insects

    Author : Tina Nilsson; Göran Arnqvist; David Hosken; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ecology; Bruchidae; cryptic female choice; multiple mating; sexual conflict; sexually antagonistic coevolution; sexual selection; speciation; sperm competition; Tenebrionidae; Ekologi; Terrestrial; freshwater and marine ecology; Terrestisk; limnisk och marin ekologi;

    Abstract : Multiple mating by females is common in nature. Yet, the evolution and maintenance of polyandry remains a bit of an evolutionary puzzle. It was my aim in this thesis to reach a greater understanding of this phenomenon as well as to investigate the consequences of polyandry on the evolution of reproductive divergence in insects. 5. 5. Pre- and post-copulatory sexual selection in the fowl, Gallus gallus

    Author : Hanne Løvlie; Sven Jakobsson; Tommaso Pizzari; Matthew J. G. Gage; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; cryptic female choice; Gallus; inbreeding avoidance; mate choice; sexual conflict; sexual selection; sperm competition; Ethology and behavioural ecology; Etologi och beteendeekologi; etologi; Ethology;

    Abstract : The evolutionary goal of individuals is reproduction and sexual selection favours traits improving reproductive success. When males invest less than females in offspring, males have potentially a higher reproductive rate than females. READ MORE
