  1. 6. Liver tumour promoting effects by polychlorinated biphenyls

    Author : Marie Haag Grönlund; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : tumour promotion; altered hepatic foci; rat liver; PCB; potency; TEF; interactions; antagonism; biologically based cancer growth models; TCDD;

    Abstract : PCBs cause a number of toxic effects and are present in a variety of biological samples including fish, meat and diary products. Cancer is a serious toxic effect by PCBs that has been observed in animal experiments but the knowledge about PCB induced carcinogenicity is still scarce. READ MORE

  2. 7. Biological and environmental monitoring of polychlorinated biphenyls : theoretical and practical aspects of liquid chromatography

    Author : Eva Grimvall; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; PCB; Miljöövervakning;

  3. 8. An evaluation of the distributions of polychlorinated biphenyls and organic matter in coastal sediments

    Author : Anders Jönsson; Örjan Gustafsson; Detlef Schulz-Bull; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Polychlorinated biphenyls PCBs ; organic carbon; sediment; stable carbon isotopes; Earth sciences; Geovetenskap;

    Abstract : The objective of this thesis is to improve the understanding of what processes and mechanism affects the distribution of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and organic carbon in coastal sediments. Because of the strong association of hydrophobic organic contaminants (HOCs) such as PCBs with organic matter in the aquatic environment, these two entities are naturally linked. READ MORE

  4. 9. Sources of dioxins and other POPs to the marine environment : Identification and apportionment using pattern analysis and receptor modeling

    Author : Kristina Sundqvist; Karin Wiberg; Mats Tysklind; Paul Geladi; Miriam Diamond; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; air-water gas exchange; chiral; congener pattern; enantiomer; enantiomeric fraction; fugacity; HCH; hexachlorocyclohexane; homologue profile; indicator congener; isomer pattern; pattern analysis; PCA; PCB; PCDD F; PMF; polychlorinated dibenzofuran; polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxin; polychlorinated biphenyl; positive matrix factorization; principal component analysis; receptor modeling; source apportioning; source; source tracing; Environmental chemistry; Miljökemi; Persistent organic compounds; Persistenta organiska föreningar;

    Abstract : In the studies underlying this thesis, various source tracing techniques were applied to environmental samples from the Baltic region. Comprehensive sampling and analysis of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) in surface sediments in Swedish coastal and offshore areas resulted in a unique data set for this region. 5. 10. Fertility and female dietary exposure to persistent organochlorine compounds

    Author : Anna Axmon; Avdelningen för arbets- och miljömedicin; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; industrial medicine; Yrkesmedicin; arbetsmiljömedicin; Public health; epidemiology; Folkhälsa; epidemiologi; Occupational health; DDE; DDT; dioxins; polychlorinated biphenyls; persistent organochlorine compounds; stillbirths; miscarriages; Fertility; time to pregnancy;

    Abstract : Persistent organochlorine compounds (POC), such as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) and dioxins, are long-lived and highly lipophilic compounds which are present in all biota today. In Sweden, one of the major exposure routes for POC is through the consumption of fatty fish from the Baltic Sea, which is off the east coast of Sweden, and one of the most highly exposed populations is the fishermen's wives and sisters from the east coast.
