  1. 1. Multilayer Structures for Biomaterial Applications : Biomacromolecule-based Coatings

    Author : Tobias Halthur; Per M. Claesson; Bjørn Stokke; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; multilayer; layer-by-layer deposition; physical chemistry; surface chemistry; adsorption; ellipsometry; QCM-D; DPI; protein adsorption; polypeptides; biomaterials; biosurfaces; amelogenin; solid liquid interface; Surface and colloid chemistry; Yt- och kolloidkemi;

    Abstract : The cellular response to a biomaterial, such as a dental implant, is mainly governed by the surface properties, and can thus be altered by the introduction of a surface coating. In this thesis the buildup of a biomacromolecule-based coating formed by layerby-layer (LbL) deposition of the charged polypeptides poly(L-lysine) (PLL) and poly(L-glutamic acid) (PGA) has been studied. 2. 2. Surface interactions and adsorbate structures : An atomic force microscopy study

    Author : Goran Bogdanovic; KTH; []
    Keywords : atomic force microscope; AFM; cantilever calibration; colloidal probe; surface force; force curve; friciton; hydrophobic; adhesion; roughness; multilayer; silica; cellulose; cationic polyelectrolyte; MAPTAC;

    Abstract : Atomic force microscopy, AFM, was used for studying somecurrent topics in the field of surface and colloid science. Themain topics addressed in this thesis were: the nature of thelong-range attraction between hydrophobic surfaces; slidingfriction behavior for microscopic contacts; and interfacialstructuring of polyelectrolyte-nanoparticle multilayerfilms. Abstract : Due to climate change and plastic pollution, there is an increasing demand for bio-based materials with similar properties to those of common plastics yet biodegradable. In this respect, cellulose is a strong candidate that is already being refined on a large industrial scale, but the properties differ significantly from those of common plastics in terms of shapeability and water-resilience. 4. 4. Protein and polyelectrolyte layer-by-layer films: Assembly and electron transfer

    Author : Karolina Haberska; Biokemi och Strukturbiologi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; layer-by-layer assembly; nanoparticles; electron transfer; bioelectrocatalysis;

    Abstract : A layer-by-layer deposition technique for assembly of the three-dimensional bioelectrochemical systems, with potential applications such as sensing layers in biosensors or catalytic organisations in biofuel cells, was addressed in this thesis. Several investigations were carried out to understand and control multilayer films formation on planar surfaces, using electrochemical and ellipsometrical methods. READ MORE

  5. 5. Structures of Polyelectrolyte Multilayers and Preasorbed Mucin : The Influence of Counterions

    Author : Zsombor Feldötö; Eva Blomberg; Regine von Klitzing; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Surface and colloid chemistry; Yt- och kolloidkemi;

    Abstract : The focus in this thesis has been to gain a fundamental understanding of how different type of salts affect preadsorbed polyelectrolytes, both natural and synthetic. The knowledge from the fundamental work is then applied on a commercial system to investigate if the efficiency can be enhanced. READ MORE
