  1. 21. DNA strand exchange and hydrophobic interactions between biomolecules

    Author : Bobo Feng; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; ATP synthase; DNA; membrane proteins; linear dichroism; Hydrophobic interactions; self-assembly; strand exchange; nanotechnology; liposomes;

    Abstract : The role of hydrophobic interactions in DNA strand exchange has been studied using fluorescence-labeled DNA oligomers in a FRET assay. Strand exchange was found to be accelerated in the presence of polyethylene glycol, which provides a crowded and hydrophobic environment possibly mimicking that of the catalytically active recombinase-DNA complexes. Abstract : Over the past decades, concerns for the environment have increased and efforts to achieve a sustainable society have intensified. One particular challenge is to replace fossil-based plastics with biodegradable materials produced from renewable resources. READ MORE

  3. 23. Hydrogen Bonding in Liquid Alcohols

    Author : Per Sillrén; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Hydrogen Bonded Liquids; Physics of liquids; Diffraction; Monte Carlo Simulation; Alcohols; Neutron Scattering; EPSR;

    Abstract : Hydrogen bonded (H-bonded) materials, such as water, alcohols, sugars, and even DNA, are extremely important for biology, as well as chemical industry. Alcohols are used as solvents in paints, in perfumes, as cleaners, anti-freezers, or as an alternative to petrol in combustion engines. READ MORE

  4. 24. The synthesis of dendritic hydrogels and inorganic nanoparticles and their application as antibacterial and imaging materials

    Author : Yanmiao Fan; Michael Malkoch; Annelie Brauner; Mauri Kostiainen; KTH; []
    Keywords : antibacterial hydrogels; dendritic polymers; dendrimers; silicon nanoparticles; cellulose nanofibrils; drug-resistant bacteria; wound dressings; Fiber- och polymervetenskap; Fibre and Polymer Science;

    Abstract : AbstractThe overuse and misuse of conventional antibiotics has caused increased prevalence of drug-resistant bacteria, the infections of which cause high mortality and economic losses per year. It is therefore crucial to develop new technologies and treatments for infections caused by drug-resistant bacteria. READ MORE

  5. 25. Sulfur-Related Conservation Concerns in Marine Archaeological Wood : The Origin, Speciation and Distribution of Accumulated Sulfur with Some Remedies for the Vasa

    Author : Yvonne Fors; Magnus Sandström; Ian MacLeod; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Sulfur accumulation; marine archaeological wood; Vasa; acidity; iron; ammonia; x-ray spectroscopy; cellulose; Chemistry; Kemi; strukturkemi; Structural Chemistry;

    Abstract : Synchrotron-based sulfur spectroscopy reveals a common concern for marine archaeological wood from seawater: accumulation of reduced sulfur compounds in two pathways. The distribution of sulfur species in the oak wood cell structure was mapped by scanning x-ray spectro-microscopy (SXM). READ MORE
