  1. 1. Polymer Nanocomposites in Thin Film Applications

    Author : Linda Fogelström; Anders Hult; José M. Kenny; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Nanocomposites; hyperbranched polymers; montmorillonite; clay nanoparticles; exfoliated; coatings; crosslinking; TEM; XRD; mechanical properties; thermal properties; cellulose nanofibers; Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization; Ring-Opening Polymerization; poly ε-caprolactone ; surface modification; grafting; interfacial adhesion; Polymer chemistry; Polymerkemi;

    Abstract : The introduction of a nanoscopic reinforcing phase to a polymer matrix offers great possibilities of obtaining improved properties, enabling applications outside the boundaries of traditional composites. The majority of the work in this thesis has been devoted to polymer/clay nanocomposites in coating applications, using the hydroxyl-functional hyperbranched polyester Boltorn® as matrix and montmorillonite clay as nanofiller. 2. 2. Poly(N-Isopropylacrylamide) Polymer Brush Functionalized Nanostructures as Thermo-Responsive Gating Systems for Protein Transportation

    Author : Justas Svirelis; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; biomolecule transportation; Poly N-Isopropylacrylamide ; polymer brushes; fluorescence microscopy; thermo-responsive polymers; surface plasmon resonance;

    Abstract : Controlling molecule translocation through nanosized gaps is of great interest in novel systems for single molecule analysis and biomolecular membranes. The molecular gating property of thermo-responsive end-grafted poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) polymer brushes on well-shaped gold-silica nanostructures is intended to be investigated for controlled protein transportation via extinction spectroscopy and fluorescence microscopy methods below and above PNIPAM lower critical solution temperature (LCST; 32 °C in water). 3. 3. Tailoring Surface Properties of Bio-Fibers via Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization

    Author : Josefina Lindqvist; Eva Malmström; Steven Rannard; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; cellulose; bio-fiber; atom transfer radical polymerization; surface modification; grafting; polymer brushes; functional surfaces; superhydrophobic; stimuli-responsive; Polymer chemistry; Polymerkemi;

    Abstract : The potential use of renewable, bio-based polymers in high-technological applications has attracted great interest due to increased environmental concern. Cellulose is the most abundant biopolymer resource in the world, and it has great potential to be modified to suit new application areas. READ MORE

  4. 4. Tuning Properties of Surfaces and Nanoscopic Objects using Dendronization and Controlled Polymerizations

    Author : Emma Östmark; Eva Malmström; Heikki Tenhu; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Dendrimers; dendronized polymers; cellulose; Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization; Ring-Opening Polymerization; surface modification; grafting; superhydrophobic; amphiphilic polymer; block copolymer; Atomic Force Microscopy; Polymer chemistry; Polymerkemi;

    Abstract : In this study, dendronization and grafting via controlled polymerization techniques, atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) and ring-opening polymerization (ROP), have been explored. Modification of surfaces and cellulose using these techniques, which enable grafting of well-defined polymer architectures, has been investigated. READ MORE
