1. Microbial and enzymatic syntheses of polymer building blocks through selective transformations of polyols and furans
Abstract : AbstractTransition from fossil- to bio-based economy is a critical step towards reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and climate change, and hence for achievement of sustainable communities and environment. In order to be fossil-free, the chemical and material industry is in need of carbon-neutral building blocks from renewable resources for the diverse array of products that are currently produced from olefins and aromatics. 2. Synthesis of 11C-labelled monosaccharides
Abstract : The synthesis of some 11C-labelled (tl/2=20.3 min) monosaccharides is presented. Terminal labelled alkenes were synthesized and selectively oxidized using asymmetric dihydroxylation (AD) and palladium(II)-promoted oxidation. The labelled polyols obtained after the AD were submitted to enzymatic oxidations. READ MORE

3. Transition Metal Catalysis for Selective Synthesis and Sustainable Chemistry
Abstract : This thesis discusses the preparation and use of transition-metal catalysts for selective organic chemical reactions. Specifically, two different matters have been studied; the asymmetric hydrogenation of carbon-carbon double bonds using N,P-ligated iridium catalysts and the metal-catalyzed transfer of small molecules from biomass to synthetic intermediates. 4. Regioselective acylation of carbohydrates and polyester synthesis by lipase catalysis
Abstract : The lipases' high regio- and enantioselectivity, activity inorganic solvent and environmentally compatible reactionconditions have made lipase-catalysis based synthesis anattractive alternative to conventional synthetic methods inorganic chernistry and a new synthetic tool in polymerchemistry. The regioselective acylation of methy1 glycopyranosides wereinvestigated using several serine hydrolases. 5. Managing irritable bowel syndrome - Dietary approaches and food intolerance
Abstract : Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a complex disorder where diet plays a pivotal role in symptom generation for many patients. The aim of this thesis was to explore how diet and self-perceived food intolerance relate to gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms among patients with IBS, and within different manifestations of IBS.
