  1. 11. Antioxidants in Andean food and meals

    Author : Leslie Tejeda; Livsmedelsteknik; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Antioxidant capacity; polyphenolic compounds; anthocyanidins; individual food; meals; ans and stan genes;

    Abstract : Abstract The constant need to improve health and to prevent disease in Bolivia, especially in the Andean region with its extreme environmental conditions (high altitude and lower temperatures), motivated us to extend studies of antioxidant sources in foods and plants, since antioxidants are believed to have major health benefits. Spectrophotometric methods, such as ABTS (2, 2’- azinobis-3-ethylbenzotiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) and FRAP (ferric reduction antioxidant power), were used to evaluate antioxidant activity. READ MORE

  2. 12. Characterization, toxicity and treatment of wood leachate generated outdoors by the wood-based industry

    Author : Henric Svensson; Linnéuniversitetet; []
    Keywords : LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; Wood leachate; Log yard runoff; Stormwater; Toxicity; Artemia salina; Vibrio fischeri; Constructed wetlands; Forestry and Wood Technology; Skog och träteknik;

    Abstract : Wood is a natural raw material, and would hardly be considered a risk to the environment. However, the handling of wood materials on an industrial scale has been shown to have a negative impact on water bodies that run-off from industrial sites that process wood-based materials. 3. 13. Electrochemical Reactions of Quinones at Conducting Polymer Electrodes

    Author : Canyan Che; Xavier Crispin; Mikhail Vagin; Magnus Jonsson; Viktor Gueskine; Mieczyslaw Lapkowski; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY;

    Abstract : Proton-coupled multielectron transfer reactions are of great abundance in Nature. In particular, two-proton-two-electron transfers in quinone/hydroquinone redox couples are behind oxidative phosphorylation (ADP-to-ATP) and photosystem II. READ MORE

  4. 14. Fermented probiotic beverage based on quinoa : Functionality, hygiene, and health effects

    Author : Pamela Rosario Canaviri Paz; Avdelningen för livsmedel och läkemedel; []
    Keywords : LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; Quinoa grains; Fermentation; Lactic acid bacteria; Probiotics; Food safety; Starter culture; Polyphenol compounds; Microbiota composition; Functional food; Gut microbiota;

    Abstract : White quinoa grains were used as a source of novel beneficial microorganisms and as a matrix for development of a fermented plant-based drink. Studies on the quinoa grain microbiota were performed by applying spontaneous fermentation to allow isolation of autochthonous Lactiplantibacillus strains with potential to be used as starter cultures. 5. 15. Novel clean-up, concentration and laser desorption/ionization strategies for mass spectrometry

    Author : Mohammadreza Shariatgorji; Leopold Ilag; Juan Astorga-wells; Bernhard Spengler; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Mass spectrometry; ESI-MS; SALDI-MS; Electrocapture; Sample treatment; Analytical chemistry; Analytisk kemi; Analytical Chemistry; analytisk kemi;

    Abstract : Despite valuable advantages of mass spectrometry (MS) techniques they still have drawbacks that need to be overcome, notably their sensitivity to various kinds of interfering substances and associated difficulties involved in detecting signals from analytes present in trace quantities. Thus, high quality analytical data could be acquired by improving sample pre-treatment techniques and/or ionization methods to increase ionization yields and/or avoid the generation of unwanted ions.
