21. Mineral fibers, cigarette smoke, and oxidative DNA damage : An experimental study
Abstract : This study concerns the ability of mineral fibers and cigarette smoke to generate reactive oxygen metabolites and to cause damage to DNA. The generation of hydroxyl radicals (OH") was demonstrated by using the DNA base, deoxyguanosine (dG) as a trapping agent for OH" and determining its hydroxylation to 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine (80HdG), and oxidative DNA damage was assessed as formation of 80HdG in isolated DNA or in DNA of human lung cells in culture. 22. Extraction and chromatography of bioactive compounds in complex samples using supercritical CO2 technology
Abstract : Bioactive compounds found in plants have been of interest to man since ancient times. These compounds have the ability to modulate the metabolic processes in our bodies, which suggests that they may promote better health. Bioactive compounds vary in their chemical structure, polarity, stability and biological activity. READ MORE

23. Angiogenesis in obesity and cancer
Abstract : Angiogenesis is the process of blood vessel growth from pre-existing vasculatures. In the adult, it is involved in certain physiological processes, such as in organ and tissue regeneration, wound healing, and in female reproductive cycles. READ MORE

24. Thioredoxin reductase as a target enzyme for electrophilic anticancer drugs
Abstract : Induced production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) is a common attribute of most cancer cells. One strategy for cancer cells to maneuver the increased and potentially toxic levels of ROS is to induce the expression of cellular antioxidants and redox regulators, such as the thioredoxin (Trx) system.
