1. Xenograft Rejection : A Study of Cytokine mRNA Expression in Experimental Models
Abstract : Acute cellular xenograft rejection of ICCs triggered mRNA expression of proinflammatory cytokines (IL-1b and TNF-a), Th1 associated cytokines (IL-12p40, IL-2 and IFN-g) and Th2 associated cytokines (IL-4 and IL-10). The peak values and the kinetics of the mRNA expression indicated that acute cellular xenograft rejection is enhanced by the proinflammatory response and mediated by the Th1 associated response, whereas the function of the Th2 associated response most likely is to counteract the Th1 associated cytokines and thereby inhibit bystander damage by the delayed type hypersensitivity like rejection process. 2. Immunity against porcine islet xenografts in man
Abstract : Due to the lack of organs for clinical transplantation, alternative sources have been investigated. One solution to this shortage could be xenotransplantation, i.e. the transplantation of organs/cells across species barriers. READ MORE

3. Islet Xenotransplantation : An Experimental Study of Barriers to Clinical Transplantation
Abstract : In the field of transplantation, the increasing deficit of human donors have lead to an interest in animals as an alternative source of organs and tissues. Different in vitro systems and rodent models of xenotransplantation were used to examine the most significant barriers that have to be overcome, before isolated islets of Langerhans from pigs can be used as a cure for insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus in humans. 4. Imaging Islets of Langerhans by Positron Emission Tomography : Quantification of Beta-Cell Mass in the Native Pancreas and the Islet Graft
Abstract : Type 1 and 2 Diabetes Mellitus are a growing health problem throughout the world. There is an increasing need for methodologies, which are both reliable and non-invasive to measure the amount of insulin-producing tissue (Beta-cell mass, or BCM), as well as rapidly quantify changes in the BCM due to the onset of disease, beta-cell replacement therapy, or other treatments. 5. Isolated islets of Langerhans trigger an instant blood mediated inflammatory reaction : a finding with implications for intraportal islet transplantation
Abstract : Islet transplantation offers a logical means to treat insulin-dependent diabetes. However, for reasons poorly understood, the clinical results with islet transplantation have been vastly inferior to those obtained with whole organ pancreas transplantation. READ MORE
