  1. 1. Obesity and Common Surgical Disorders, Effects on Incidence and Complications

    Author : Anders Rosemar; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Obesity; complications; BMI; diverticular disease; groin hernia; postoperative complications; groin hernia repair; surgery; incidence;

    Abstract : Background: Overweight and obesity are becoming increasingly common, not only in the developed countries but also in developing countries. It is well documented that obesity increases the risk of several medical disorders; however, less is known of effects of obesity on common surgical disorders and treatments. READ MORE

  2. 2. Perioperative complications in obese patients : A thesis on risk reducing strategies

    Author : Fredrik Ander; Lars Berggren; Rebecca Ahlstrand; Alex de Leon; Johan Raeder; Örebro universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Intubation time; videolaryngoscopy; obesity; esophagogastric junction; remifentanil; esmolol; high-resolution manometry; pulmonary aspiration; postoperative pain; postoperative opioid-sparing;

    Abstract : Aspiration of gastric content and delayed or failed intubation are the leading causes of anesthesia-related mortality and morbidity. In the recovery period, airway obstruction with subsequent hypoxia is a relatively common cause of morbidity, and is highly associated to the amount of opioids administered, especially in obese patients. 3. 3. Effects of Deep Breathing Exercises after Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery

    Author : Elisabeth Westerdahl; Arne Tenling; Göran Hedenstierna; Birgitta Lindmark; Anders Larsson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Physical therapy; atelectasis; breathing exercises; coronary artery bypass; computed tomography; physiotherapy; postoperative care; postoperative complications; respiratory function tests; thoracic surgery; Sjukgymnastik; Physiotherapy; Sjukgymnastik fysioterapi;

    Abstract : Deep breathing exercises are widely used in the postoperative care to prevent or reduce pulmonary complications, but no scientific evidence for the efficacy has been found after coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) surgery. The aim of the thesis was to describe postoperative pulmonary function and to evaluate the efficacy of deep breathing exercises performed with or without a blow bottle device for positive expiratory pressure (PEP) 10 cmH2O or an inspiratory resistance-positive expiratory pressure (IR-PEP) mask with an inspiratory pressure of -5 cmH2O and an expiratory pressure of +10 to +15 cmH2O. 4. 4. Pulmonary Atelectasis in General Anaesthesia : Clinical Studies on the Counteracting Effects of Positive End-Expiratory Pressure

    Author : Erland Östberg; Mats Enlund; Lennart Edmark; Sophie Lindgren; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; General anaesthesia; pulmonary atelectasis; positive end-expiratory pressure; oxygen; computed tomography; continuous positive airway pressure; mechanical ventilation; Anestesiologi och intensivvård; Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care;

    Abstract : Partial lung collapse, i.e., pulmonary atelectasis, is common during general anaesthesia. The main causal mechanism is reduced lung volume with airway closure and subsequent gas absorption from preoxygenated alveoli. READ MORE
