  1. 11. Food or fuel? : trade-offs between food and biofuels globally and in small-scale organic agriculture

    Author : Sheshti Johansson; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : There are great expectations on agriculture to provide both food and fuels in the future. Previous attempts to estimate the global bioenergy potential have produced varying results, indicating major uncertainty. This thesis investigated the global theoretical 'potential', or limit, for biofuels based on current agricultural systems. READ MORE

  2. 12. Genomic-led potato breeding

    Author : Catja Selga; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Most cultivated potatoes (Solanum tuberosum L.) are polyploids with tetrasomic inheritance (2n = 4x = 48), which makes breeding for new improved cultivars more complicated compared to diploid crops. READ MORE

  3. 13. Genetically Engineered Plants: Improved stress tolerance, growth and facilitated protein purification

    Author : Gösta Lilius; Tillämpad biokemi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; glycine betaine; gene; freezing; flooding; drought; dicoteledones; desiccation; compatible solutes; cold; choline dehydrogenase; chill; CDH; betaine; betA; alkaloids anoxia; affinity purification; affinity tags; handles; hemoglobin; hypoxia; low temperatu; Biotechnology; Bioteknik;

    Abstract : Heterologous genes were expressed in plants in which the overall goal was to increase the value of the final crop. Various aspects were explored and evaluated, such as improving the stress tolerance, enhancing the availability of oxygen in growing cells and producing rare proteins with increased degrees of purity. 4. 14. Geochemistry of Trace Elements in the Bolivian Altiplano : Effects of natural processes and anthropogenic activities

    Author : Oswaldo Eduardo Ramos Ramos; Prosun Bhattacharya; Jorge Quintanilla; Roger Thunvik; Jochen Bundshuh; Maria Eugenia Garcia Moreno; Luiz R.G. Guilherme; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Arsenic; Bolivian Altiplano; Eastern Cordillera; Trace elements; Surface water and shallow groundwater; Soils and crops.; Mark- och vattenteknik; Land and Water Resources Engineering;

    Abstract : The occurrence of As in groundwater in Argentina was known since 1917; however, the occurrence, distribution and mobilization of As and other trace elements (TEs) in groundwater in the Bolivian Altiplano are still quite unknown. An investigation applying a geochemical approach was conducted in the Poopó Basin and Lake Titicaca to understand processes of TEs in different systems such as water, soils, crops and sediments in mining areas. 5. 15. Dietary Patterns : Identification and Health Implications in the Swedish Population

    Author : Erika Ax; Per Sjögren; Agneta Andersson; Wulf Becker; Berit Lilienthal Heitmann; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Dietary Pattern; Dietary Recommendations; Dietary Survey; Environmental Contaminants; Healthy Diet Indicator; Heatlhy dietary pattern; Low-Carbohydrate; Mediterranean diet; Nutritional Biomarkers; Obesity; Overweight; Principal Component Analysis; Prostate Cancer; Sweden; Traditional dietary pattern; Medicinsk vetenskap; Medical Science; Nutrition; Nutrition;

    Abstract : We eat foods not nutrients. What is more, we eat them in combinations. Consequently, capturing our complex food habits is likely an advantage in nutrition research. The overall aim of this doctoral thesis was therefore to investigate dietary patterns in the Swedish population –nutrient intakes, nutritional biomarkers and health aspects. READ MORE
