  1. 1. In the wake of a bird - Quantifying aerodynamic performance of avian flight

    Author : Marco Klein Heerenbrink; Evolutionär ekologi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; animal flight; flight performance; gliding; powered flight; wing morphology; aerodynamics; biomechanics; birds; jackdaw; Corvus monedula; wind tunnel; PIV;

    Abstract : Flight is an expensive form of locomotion, but also offers the ability to travel great distances at relatively low cost. Birds have developed various adaptations for optimizing flight performance. The main aim of this thesis is to identify how morphological variables in birds affect aerodynamic drag and flight performance. READ MORE

  2. 2. Aerodynamic Design and Experimental Investigation of Short Nacelles for Future Turbofan Engines

    Author : Vinícius Tavares Silva; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; ultra-high-bypass turbofan; Computational Fluid Dynamics; powered nacelle.; Ultra-short nacelles; experimental; thrust-and-drag bookkeeping;

    Abstract : To achieve a higher propulsive efficiency, and hence reduced fuel burn and emissions, the next generation turbofan engines are expected to have higher bypass ratios and lower fan pressure ratios. However, the larger the bypass ratio, the larger becomes the fan and thus the nacelle. The result is an undesired increase in weight and nacelle drag. READ MORE

  3. 3. Performance Studies and Star Tracking for PoGOLite

    Author : Cecilia Marini Bettolo; Mark Pearce; Nicolas Produit; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; polarization; pulsars; x-ray; PoGOLite; Astroparticle physics; Astropartikelfysik;

    Abstract : PoGOLite is a balloon-borne experiment, which will study polarized soft γ-ray emissionfrom astrophysical targets in the 25-80 keV energy range by applying well-typephoswich detector technology. Polarized γ-rays are expected from a wide variety of sources including rotation-powered pulsars, accreting black holes and neutron stars,and jet-dominated active galaxies. READ MORE

  4. 4. Aerodynamic Aspects of Propulsion Integration for Next-generation Commercial Aircraft

    Author : Vinícius Tavares Silva; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Propulsion integration; Ultra-high-bypass-ratio engines; Low-speed testing.; Aerodynamics; Computational Fluid Dynamics; Ultra-short nacelles over-wing nacelle;

    Abstract : Propulsion integration is one of the most challenging aspects of aircraft design. It requires a multidisciplinary approach involving aerodynamics, propulsion, structures, weight, noise, and control systems. READ MORE

  5. 5. On stability, transition and turbulence in three-dimensional boundary-layer flows

    Author : Seyed Mohammd Hosseini; Ardeshir Hanifi; Spencer Sherwin; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Receptivity; stability; optimal growth; three-dimensional bound- ary layers; crossflow instability; roughness control; freestream turbulence; sec- ondary instability; transition; turbulence;

    Abstract : A lot has changed since that day on December 17, 1903 when the Wright brothers made the first powered manned flight. Even though the concepts behind flying are unaltered, appearance of stat-of-the-art modern aircrafts has undergone a massive evolution. READ MORE
