  1. 1. On the role of ppGpp and DksA mediated control of σ54-dependent transcription

    Author : Lisandro Bernardo; Victoria Shingler; Victor de Lorenzo; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; ppGpp; DksA; σ54-transcription; global regulation; E. coli; P. putida; Molecular biology; Molekylärbiologi;

    Abstract : The σ54-dependent Po promoter drives transcription of an operon that encodes a suite of enzymes for (methyl)phenols catabolism. Transcription from Po is controlled by the sensor-activator DmpR that binds (methyl)phenol effectors to take up its active form. READ MORE

  2. 2. New insights into the role of ppGpp and DksA through their effect on transcriptional regulation of housekeeping and colonization related genes of Escherichia coli

    Author : Anna Åberg; Carlos Balsalobre; Anne Farewell; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Escherichia coli; type 1 fimbriae; fimB; phase variation; transcription; global gene regualtion; ppGpp; DksA; gre-factors; RNA polymerase; Medical microbiology; Medicinsk mikrobiologi;

    Abstract : Bacteria have the ability to sense different environmental signals. When an environmental stress is detected, bacteria rapidly adjust their gene expression profile to be able to survive and thrive. READ MORE

  3. 3. The Importance of a Fifth Element in Transcription: Transcriptional Discrimination in Escherichia coli

    Author : Bertil Gummesson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Escherichia coli; RNA polymerase; ppGpp; DksA; stringent response; passive regulation;

    Abstract : Upon growth arrest of the bacterium Escherichia coli, RNA polymerase (Es70) is redirected from transcribing genes encoding the protein synthesizing system (PSS) to those involved in maintenance and stress resistance. The small nucleotide ppGpp, which is directly targeting Es70, is a key regulatory molecule required for this response. READ MORE

  4. 4. On the role of small regulatory molecules in the interplay between σ54- and σ70-dependent transcription

    Author : Linda Holmfeldt; Victoria Shingler; Thomas Nyström; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; σ54; σ70; ppGpp; DksA; transcription regulation; Molecular biology; Molekylärbiologi; molekylärbiologi; Molecular Biology;

    Abstract : Signal responsive transcriptional control in bacteria is mediated through both specific and global regulatory circuits to attune promoter output to prevailing conditions. Divergent transcription of a regulatory gene and a cognate promoter under its control provides an opportunity for interplay between transcription dependent on RNA polymerases utilizing various σ-factors, each of which programs the holoenzyme to recognize different classes of promoters. 5. 5. The Physiological Cost of Antibiotic Resistance

    Author : Mirjana Macvanin; Diarmaid Hughes; Stanley Maloy; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Microbiology; fusidic acid; fitness cost; protein synthesis; EF-G; ppGpp; RpoS; oxidative stress; heme; Mikrobiologi; Microbiology; immunology; infectious diseases; Mikrobiologi; immunologi; infektionssjukdomar;

    Abstract : Becoming antibiotic resistant is often associated with fitness costs for the resistant bacteria. This is seen as a loss of competitiveness against the antibiotic-sensitive wild-type in an antibiotic-free environment. READ MORE
