  1. 1. The battleground of two Infections and a cancer: Human Papilloma Virus, premalignant lesions of the cervix and their interaction with Human Immunodeficiency Virus in southwestern Nigeria

    Author : Oliver Ezechi; Socialmedicin och global hälsa; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; antiretroviral drugs; Human papilloma virus; cervical cancer; HIV AIDS; pre-cancerous lesions; Nigeria;

    Abstract : Background: The highest numbers of HIV-infected women are in sub- Saharan Africa, where the natural progression of HIV disease in the absence of treatment results in death before the onset of invasive cervical cancer. With improved access to treatment, several studies outside West Africa demonstrated an increased risk of pre-invasive cervical lesions among HIV-infected women and the positive impact of treatment on the outcome. 2. 2. Molecular markers reflecting malignant transformation and tumor progression

    Author : Patricia Stoltzfus; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Molecular markers; interphase fluorescence in situ hytidization; genetic diagnostic test; laminin-5 gamma2 chain; immunohistochemistry; precancerous lesions; invasiveness; breast cancer; cervical squamous cell carcinoma; tongue carcinoma; vulvar carcinoma;

    Abstract : The early detection of neoplastic lesions is most critical in the successful treatment of malignant disease. This thesis investigates molecular targets for an improved detection and diagnosis of cancer by exploring the value of interphase fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) to detect specific chromosomal aneuploidies and gene amplifications, and laminin-5 gamma2 chain expression detected by immunohistochemistry as a marker for invasiveness. 3. 3. Multi-level characterization of host and pathogen in Helicobacter pylori-associated gastric carcinogenesis

    Author : Kaisa Thorell; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; gastroenterology; cancer; infection; Helicobacter pylori; sequencing; genomics; transcriptomics; genomics;

    Abstract : Today, more than half of the world’s population is infected with Helicobacter pylori, and two to three per cent of these will develop gastric cancer associated with this infection. Gastric cancer is today the third largest cause of cancer mortality worldwide, with more than 700 000 deaths annually, a number that is expected to increase. H. READ MORE

  4. 4. Biomarkers of one-carbon metabolism in colorectal cancer risk

    Author : Björn Gylling; Richard Palmqvist; Katarina Bälter; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Colorectal cancer; one-carbon metabolism; biomarkers; folate; epidemiology; Cancer Epidemiology; cancerepidemiologi;

    Abstract : One-carbon metabolism, a network of enzymatic reactions involving the transfer of methyl groups, depends on B-vitamins as cofactors, folate as a methyl group carrier, and amino acids, betaine, and choline as methyl group donors. One-carbon metabolism influences many processes in cancer initiation and development such as DNA synthesis, genome stability, and histone and epigenetic methylation. READ MORE

  5. 5. Prevention of cervical cancer in rural Laos

    Author : Keokedthong Phongsavan; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Knowledge;

    Abstract : Background: Cervical cancer has a major impact on the lives of women worldwide, but particularly those in low-income countries. The disease can, however, be prevented by a variety of screening methods aiming to detect pre-cancerous lesions that can be treated. READ MORE
