  1. 1. Biochemical Study and Technical Applications of Fungal Pectinase

    Author : Jing Zhang; Gunnar Johansson; Gunnar Henriksson; Jonas Hafrén; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biochemistry; Pectin; pectinase; polygalacturonan; polygalacturonase; retting; flax; enzymatic retting; pre-incubation; discoloration; pulping; Biokemi; Biochemistry; Biokemi;

    Abstract : Pectinases are a group of enzymes produced by bacteria, fungi, higher plants and animals. Pectinases can modify and degrade pectins, a class of heterogeneous and multifunctional polysaccharides present in middle lamellae and primary cell walls of plants. READ MORE

  2. 2. Technical challenges in human islet isolation

    Author : Magnus Ståhle; Olle Korsgren; Andrew Friberg; Federico Bertuzzi; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Transplantation of islets of Langerhans is an effective treatment option for patients with brittle type 1 diabetes mellitus. This treatment restores glucose control and also reduces hypoglycemia. Unfortunately, the outcome from islet isolations is variable, and many preparations do not yield sufficient islet number or islet quality. READ MORE

  3. 3. Prevention of hemolysis as a novel strategy to limit hemoglobin-mediated lipid oxidation in fish - towards a more sustainable use of fish raw materials

    Author : Semhar Ghirmai; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; hemoglobin; herring Clupea harengus ; fish; rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss ; erythrocyte; hemolysis; side-stream; antioxidant; lipid oxidation; blood plasma;

    Abstract : Hemoglobin (Hb) has been recognized as a main pro-oxidant in fish, causing fast and intense lipid oxidation. This thesis explores the hypothesis that maintaining red blood cells (RBCs) intact for an extended time during fish processing could delay Hb-mediated lipid oxidation. READ MORE

  4. 4. Studies of Mesenchymal Progenitor Cells and Tumour Growth, Integrins and Matrix Metalloproteinases

    Author : Lars Bryngelsson Ohlsson; Immunologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Immunology; Tumour inhibition; cancer; onkologi; cancerology; Cytologi; oncology; Cytology; Biologi; Biology; Medicin människa och djur ; Medicine human and vertebrates ; Integrin matrix metalloproteinase interaction; Immunologi; serologi; transplantation; Proteins; enzymology; Proteiner; enzymologi; serology; Mesenchumal progenitor cells;

    Abstract : In this thesis we characterize the effect of mesenchymal progenitor cells (MPCs) on tumour growth, and show that MPCs can have inhibitory effects on tumour development. We developed a method to subcutaneously transplant tumour cells, cultured in vitro in a pre-formed gelatin matrix, that made it possible to study the early phases of tumour development. READ MORE

  5. 5. Capillary and interstitial transport of fluid and solutes across the peritoneal membrane

    Author : Ola Carlsson; Institutionen för experimentell medicinsk vetenskap; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; vascular resistance.; capillary pressure; aquaporins; Capillary permeability; vesicular transport; Urology; nephrology; Urologi; nefrologi;

    Abstract : According to the three-pore model of peritoneal transport the major exchange pathway between the blood and the peritoneal cavity is represented by “small pores”, permeable to small solutes and water. Osmotically induced fluid flow, as during peritoneal dialysis (PD), is postulated to occur to a great extent through a water-only pathway, whereas proteins are predicted to reach the peritoneal cavity by unidirectional convection across “large pores”.
