  2. 22. Modulators of Vibrio cholerae predator interaction and virulence

    Author : Barbro Lindmark; Sun Nyunt Wai; Kristian Riesbeck; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Vibrio cholerae; Caenorhabditis elegans; PrtV; outer membrane vesicles; non-O1 non-O139; serum resistance; Molecular biology; Molekylärbiologi; molekylärbiologi; Molecular Biology;

    Abstract : Vibrio cholerae, the causal agent of cholera typically encodes two critical virulence factors: cholera toxin (CT), which is primarily responsible for the diarrhoeal purge, and toxin-co-regulated pilus (TCP), an essential colonisation factor. Nontoxigenic strains expressing TCP can efficiently acquire the CT gene through lysogenic conversion with CTXΦ, a filamentous phage that encodes CT and uses TCP as a receptor. READ MORE

  3. 23. Predator-prey interactions of raptors in an arctic environment

    Author : Jesper Nyström; Anders Angerbjörn; A. Rolf Ims; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ecology of raptors; Terrestrial; freshwater and marine ecology; Terrestisk; limnisk och marin ekologi;

    Abstract : This thesis concerns the predator-prey interactions of three raptor species in a Swedish arctic community: the gyrfalcon (Falco rusticolus), the rough-legged buzzard (Buteo lagopus) and the golden eagle (Aquila chrysaetos). The gyrfalcon behaved like a highly specialised ptarmigan (Lagopus spp.) predator. READ MORE

  4. 24. Predator-induced phenotypic plasticity in the marine mussel Mytilus edulis

    Author : Olof Reimer; Christer Brönmark; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Systems Ecology; systemekologi;

    Abstract : In this thesis I investigated whether the risk of predation can induce development of defensive traits in the blue mussel Mytilus edulis, a common species of the temperate seashores. I performed a series of field and laboratory experiments in which I exposed blue mussels to waterborne scents from its main predators, the starfish Asterias rubens, and the shore crab Carcinus maenas. 5. 25. Why and how brain size evolves : Sociality, predation and allometry

    Author : Wouter van der Bijl; Niclas Kolm; Joah Madden; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; brain size; brain size evolution; encephalization; predation; predator inspection; sociality; animal contest; constraint; etologi; Ethology;

    Abstract : The evolution of the vertebrate brain has remained a topic of intense interest from biologists over many decades. Evolutionary biologists have seen it as an intriguing example of how the size and structure of a trait evolves across large phylogenies and under body size constraints, with both large shifts in deep evolutionary time and continuous smaller scale adaptation.
