  1. 1. Cognitive function studied in animal models of schizophrenia

    Author : Erik Pålsson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; phencyclidine; nitric oxide; prepulse inhibition; latent; nitric oxide; prepulse inhibition; latent inhibition; habituation; NMDA receptor; rat; mouse; cognition; schizophrenia;

    Abstract : Cognitive dysfunction is considered a core deficit of schizophrenia, which currently lacks effective pharmacological treatment. In order to identify novel and more effective drug treatments, translational experimental animal models of cognitive dysfunction are required. Schizophrenia-like symptoms can be induced in humans by phencyclidine (PCP). READ MORE

  2. 2. The Effect of Steroid Hormones in the Female Brain During Different Reproductive States

    Author : Elin Bannbers; Inger Sundström-Poromaa; Johan Wikström; Kristiina Kask; Eriksson Elias; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Premenstrual dysphoric disorder; Postpartum; Estradiol; Progesterone; Menstrual cycle; Functional magnetic resonance imaging; Response inhibition; Prepulse inhibition; Startle response; Medicinsk vetenskap; Medical Science;

    Abstract : Women are twice as likely as men to suffer from depression and anxiety disorders and have an increased risk of onset during periods associated with hormonal changes, such as the postpartum period and the menopausal transition. Furthermore, some women seem more sensitive to normal hormone fluctuations across the menstrual cycle, since approximately 3-5% suffers from premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD). READ MORE

  3. 3. The prefrontal cortex and information processing : nitric oxide signaling studied in an animal model of schizophrenia

    Author : Kim Fejgin; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : schizophrenia; nitric oxide; prepulse inhibition; phencyclidine; prefrontal cortex; cGMP; baclofen; cognition;

    Abstract : The prefrontal cortex has been extensively linked to several cognitive domains that are severely compromised in schizophrenia. It has therefore become a key region for studies on the disabling cognitive dysfunction commonly observed in patients with schizophrenia. READ MORE

  4. 4. Schizophrenia and Nitric Oxide: Deficits in Information Processing Invetigated in Animal Models

    Author : Daniel Klamer; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; phencyclidine – nitric oxide – prepulse inhibition – habituation – acoustic startle – cAMP – in vivo microdialysis – NMDA receptor – rat – mouse – schizophrenia;

    Abstract : Rationale: Schizophrenia-like symptoms can be induced in humans by phencyclidine (PCP), a non-competitive antagonist of the N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor. Schizophrenic patients and PCP-treated animals display deficits in pre-attentive information processing, as assessed by e.g. prepulse inhibition of the acoustic startle response. READ MORE

  5. 5. Hormones, Mood and Cognition

    Author : Kristiina Kask; Inger Sundström Poromaa; Torbjörn Bäckström; Britth-Marie Landgren; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; startle response; prepulse inhibition; premenstrual dysphoric disorder; menstrual cycle; pregnancy; postpartum period; episodic memory; semantic memory; working memory; progesterone; estradiol; allopregnanolone.; Obstetrics and gynaecology; Obstetrik och gynekologi;

    Abstract : Ovarian steroid hormones are neuroactive steroids with widespread actions in the brain, and are thus able to influence mood, behavior and cognition. In this thesis the effects of progesterone withdrawal and the direct effects of the progesterone metabolite allopregnanolone are evaluated. READ MORE
