  1. 1. Perinatal brain injury - markers and mediators. Non-protein-bound iron and pro-inflammatory cytokines in newborn infants and neonatal pigs

    Author : Karin Sävman; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Asphyxia; hypoxia; posthemorrhagic ventricular dilatation; preterm; newborn; perinatal; brain; cerebrospinal fluid; cytokines; IL-1ß; IL-6; IL-8; TNF-a; non-protein-bound-iron;

    Abstract : Two groups of newborn infants have an increased risk for perinatal brain injury; preterm infants and term infants subjected to birth asphyxia. Experimental studies indicate that hypoxic-ischemic insults in the perinatal period initiate a secondary neurotoxic cascade including formation of toxic reactive oxygen species as well as an inflammatory response with elevated levels of potentially neurotoxic cytokines. 2. 2. Characterization of immune cell profiles in meninges and brain parenchyma following injury in the developing mouse brain

    Author : Aura Zelco; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; preterm brain injury; hypoxia-ischemia; immune response; neonatal meninges;

    Abstract : Preterm newborns are particularly susceptible to complications such as hypoxia-ischemia (HI), which can result in brain injury and subsequent cognitive and/or motor function disabilities, including cerebral palsy. Immune cells have been shown to be involved in the development of perinatal brain damage, commonly with detrimental effects. READ MORE

  3. 3. Inflammation in experimental neonatal brain injury and in a clinical study of preterm birth; involvement of galectin-3 and free radical formation

    Author : Christina Doverhag; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : preterm labour; premature prelabour rupture of membranes; chorioamnionitis; hypoxia-ischemia; neonatal brain injury; NADPH oxidase; galectin-3; MMP-9; ascorbyl radicals; antioxidative capacity;

    Abstract : Introduction; Intrauterine infection/inflammation is associated with preterm delivery (PTD) and severe neonatal morbidity. Inflammation is also important in the secondary neurotoxic cascade leading to perinatal brain injury. READ MORE

  4. 4. Markers and mechanisms of abnormal neurovascular development in the preterm infant

    Author : William Hellström; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Neonatology; Brain development; Extremely preterm infant; Brain volume; Retinopathy of prematurity; Insulin-like growth factor 1; Neurofilament light; Neurodevelopment;

    Abstract : Background: The extremely preterm infant is at risk of lifelong neurodevelopmental impairments due to brain injuries or abnormal neurovascular development. Mechanisms are largely unknown and biomarkers for adverse outcomes are sparse. READ MORE

  5. 5. Inflammation and the Insulin-like Growth Factor System at Very Preterm Birth. Implications for Early Morbidity and Development

    Author : Ingrid Pupp; Lund Pediatrik; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; cord blood; brain injury; cytokines; cerebral palsy; child development; fresh frozen plasma; inflammation; preterm birth; insulin-like growth factor I;

    Abstract : The intention of this thesis was to evaluate the effects of inflammation at very preterm birth on subsequent morbidity, as well as on the neuro-protective IGF-system. Prospective clinical studies of very preterm infants constituted a base for the evaluation. READ MORE
