1. Development of breastfeeding behavior in preterm infants : Behavioral and neurophysiological evidence of early competence
Abstract : The objectives of this thesis were to develop a method for observation of maturational steps in preterm infants' breastfeeding behavior, test the reliability and validity of this method, describe this development and explore effects of certain infant and maternal factors on infant breastfeeding behavior. The Preterm Infant Breastfeeding Behavior Scale (PIBBS) was developed. READ MORE

2. Neutrophil Chemotaxis and Respiratory Burst in Term and Preterm Newborn Infants
Abstract : Neutrophil activation is the most important initial immune defense against invading microbes in newborn infants. The reduced neutrophil migration and uncontrolled regulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) production observed in neonates, could result in a diminished infectious response or in tissue damage. 3. Perinatal brain injury - markers and mediators. Non-protein-bound iron and pro-inflammatory cytokines in newborn infants and neonatal pigs
Abstract : Two groups of newborn infants have an increased risk for perinatal brain injury; preterm infants and term infants subjected to birth asphyxia. Experimental studies indicate that hypoxic-ischemic insults in the perinatal period initiate a secondary neurotoxic cascade including formation of toxic reactive oxygen species as well as an inflammatory response with elevated levels of potentially neurotoxic cytokines. 4. Surviving birth : Studies of a simplified neonatal resuscitation protocol in a low-income context using a mixed-methods approach
Abstract : United Nations has lately stated ambitious health targets for 2030 in the Sustainable Development Goal agenda, following the already achieved progress between 1990 and 2015 when the number of children dying before the age of five was reduced by more than half. However, the mortality reduction in the first month of life after birth has not kept the same pace. READ MORE

5. Premedication for intubation in newborn infants; pain assessment, pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics
Abstract : Preterm infants undergo intensive care during a vulnerable period with hemodynamic instability and a rapidly developing and immature CNS. Adequate pain management is essential, since pain experience might lead to acute physiological reactions as well as neurological and neuropsychological sequels. READ MORE
