  1. 11. Perturbed discrete time stochastic models

    Author : Mikael Petersson; Dmitrii Silvestrov; Ola Hössjer; Nikolaos Limnios; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Renewal equation; Perturbation; Asymptotic expansion; Regenerative process; Risk process; Semi-Markov process; Markov chain; Quasi-stationary distribution; Ruin probability; First hitting time; Solidarity property; Mathematical Statistics; matematisk statistik;

    Abstract : In this thesis, nonlinearly perturbed stochastic models in discrete time are considered. We give algorithms for construction of asymptotic expansions with respect to the perturbation parameter for various quantities of interest. READ MORE

  2. 12. Estimation of wood fibre length distributions from censored mixture data

    Author : Ingrid Svensson; Sara Sjöstedt - de Luna; Lennart Bondesson; Aila Särkkä; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; censoring; fibre length distribution; identifiability; increment core; length bias; mixture; stochastic EM algorithm; Mathematical statistics; Matematisk statistik;

    Abstract : The motivating forestry background for this thesis is the need for fast, non-destructive, and cost-efficient methods to estimate fibre length distributions in standing trees in order to evaluate the effect of silvicultural methods and breeding programs on fibre length. The usage of increment cores is a commonly used non-destructive sampling method in forestry. READ MORE

  3. 13. Efficient sampling of Bayesian posteriors and predictive distributions in χEFT

    Author : Isak Svensson; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; chiral effective field theory; Bayesian parameter estimation; nuclear physics; Markov chain Monte Carlo; two-nucleon scattering;

    Abstract : In this thesis I employ Bayesian statistics to quantify parametric and epistemic uncertainties in chiral effective field theories (χEFT) and propagate these forward to predictions of observables in low-energy nuclear physics. Two primary sources of uncertainty---experimental errors and the theoretical error induced by the truncation of the EFT at up to next-to-next-to-leading-order---are modelled and accounted for in the posterior distributions of the unknown low-energy constants (LECs) that govern interaction strengths in χEFT. 4. 14. On Methods for Real Time Sampling and Distributions in Sampling

    Author : Kadri Meister; Daniel Thorburn; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Mathematical statistics; Finite population sampling; inferential issues; real time sampling; sequential sampling methods; negative sampling correlations; model-design-based inference; multivariate Bernoulli and multinomial designs; Matematisk statistik; Mathematical statistics; Matematisk statistik; Mathematical Statistics; matematisk statistik;

    Abstract : This thesis is composed of six papers, all dealing with the issue of sampling from a finite population. We consider two different topics: real time sampling and distributions in sampling. The main focus is on Papers A–C, where a somewhat special sampling situation referred to as real time sampling is studied. READ MORE

  5. 15. Applications of Rice's formula in oceanographic and environmental problems

    Author : Sofia Åberg; Matematisk statistik; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; operations research; programming; actuarial mathematics; Statistik; operationsanalys; Statistics; Encountering waves; Gaussian random fields; Palm distributions; Rice s formula; wave statistics; level crossings; programmering; aktuariematematik;

    Abstract : This thesis is based on five papers (A-E), all treating various applications of Rice's formula. The areas of application are oceanographic and environmental problems. The first three papers treat properties of encountering waves, that is, waves that a ship encounters while sailing on the ocean. READ MORE
