1. Fundamental processes in thin film growth : The origin of compressive stress and the dynamics of the early growth stages
Abstract : The fundamental mechanisms behind the generation of compressive stresses in polycrystalline thin films, the effects of pulsed deposition fluxes on the dynamics of the early growth stages as well as the generation of energetic Ar+ ions in high power impulse magnetron sputtering (HiPIMS) discharges has been studied in this thesis. It was found that compressive film stresses in Mo films deposited using energetic vapor fluxes are correlated with high film densities while only a slight lattice expansion compared to relaxed Mo was found. 2. Modelling Approaches of Multiphase Phenomena Focusing on an Integrated Steelmaking Route
Abstract : Improvements in numerical methods and developments of computer hardware brought attention to the modelling of metallurgical processes. This has been a critical step in understanding in-furnace conditions throughout the ironmaking and steelmaking process since it is, if not impossible, extremely difficult to conduct measurements during the process. 3. Applied Machine Learning in Steel Process Engineering : Using Supervised Machine Learning Models to Predict the Electrical Energy Consumption of Electric Arc Furnaces
Abstract : The steel industry is in constant need of improving its production processes. This is partly due to increasing competition and partly due to environmental concerns. One commonly used method for improving these processes is through the act of modeling. READ MORE

4. Enhancing the circular economy: Resource recovery through thermochemical conversion processes of landfill waste and biomass
Abstract : Currently, the global economy looses a considerable amount of potential secondary raw materials from the disposed waste streams. Furthermore, the existing landfill sites that often do not have proper environmental protection technologies pose a long-lasting risk for the environment, which urge immediate actions for landfill remediations. 5. Thermodynamics and Kinetics in Metallurgical Processes - with a Special Focus on Bubble Dynamics
Abstract : Gas stirring is commonly used in the steelmaking processes to reinforce chemical reactions, kinetic transfer, and inclusion removal, etc. This dissertation concentrates on multiphase flows with gas bubbling to study fluid dynamics and thermodynamics in metallurgical processes. READ MORE
