  1. 6. Neural Stem and Progenitor Cells : Cellular Responses to Known and Novel Factors

    Author : Jimmy Larsson; Karin Forsberg-Nilsson; Ola Hermanson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; neural stem cell; differentiation; proliferation; migration; PDGF; SCF; NRBP2; medulloblastoma; Biochemistry; Biokemi; Medical Biochemistry; Medicinsk biokemi;

    Abstract : Neural stem cell self-renewal and differentiation are tightly regulated events during CNS development, leading to cell division into new neural stem cells or the formation of neurons and glial cells. This thesis focuses on the cellular responses induced by known and novel factors in neural stem and progenitor cells (NSPCs). READ MORE

  2. 7. Separation and Further Characterization of Hematopoietic Cell Populations Based on Phenotypic and Biophysical Properties

    Author : Josefina Dykes; Avdelningen för hematologi och transfusionsmedicin; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Hematopoiesis; Blood Group; ABO-system; Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation; Cell Separation;

    Abstract : Hematopoietic stem cells (HSC) are multipotent and possess self-renewal capacity. Thus, they can sustain a life-long hematopoiesis and are also capable of restoring the hematopoietic system when transplanted to a patient. READ MORE

  3. 8. Death mechanisms compromising hippocampal neurogenesis after status epilepticus

    Author : Christine Ekdahl Clementson; Lund Neurologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Neurology; neuropsychology; neurophysiology; Neurologi; neuropsykologi; neurofysiologi; minocycline; lipopolysaccharide; microglia activation; status epilepticus; epilepsy; cysteinyl aspartate-specific proteases; apoptosis; neurogenesis; progenitor cell progeny;

    Abstract : Status epilepticus (SE) leads to neurodegeneration as well as neurogenesis in the adult rat hippocampus. This thesis demonstrates that even if the neurogenic response initially is very pronounced, with a several-fold increase in cell proliferation, the survival of the newly formed neurons is compromised by a death mechanism involving mitochondria-related caspases. 4. 9. Contracting muscle for regeneration : myogenic dedifferentiation in limb progenitor cell formation

    Author : Sara Lööf; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : The urodele amphibians, such as newts and axolotls, are unique among vertebrates since they regenerate their limbs, tail, jaws and part of their heart and CNS as adults. After amputation of a newt limb, regeneration proceeds by the reversal of differentiation of tissues in the limb stump. READ MORE

  5. 10. Development of Gene Therapy for Hematopoietic Stem Cells using Lentiviral Vectors

    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; embryonic stem cell; Hematopoietic stem cell; lentiviral vector; transduction efficiency; transgene expression; multiple vector copy integration; insertional mutagenesis; NOD SCID mouse; cytogenetics; Genetics; extracellulära vätskor; extracellular fluids; cytogenetik; Genetik; Haematology; Hematologi; Lentivirus : genetics; Human; Genetic Vectors; Hematopoietic Stem Cells : metabolism; Animal; Gene Therapy; Leukemia : therapy; Leukemia : metabolism;

    Abstract : Hematopoietic stem cells are an ideal target for genetic manipulation for the purpose of curing hematological disorders as they have the ability to develop into all blood lineages and to self-renew. In this study we demonstrate that lentiviral vectors, based on HIV-1, can efficiently transfer genes into human hematopoietic progenitor and stem cells as assessed following stem cell transplantation in immune compromised mice.
