  1. 1. Prevalence and Prognostic Impact of Periodontal Disease and Conventional Risk Factors in Patients with Stable Coronary Heart Disease

    Author : Ola Vedin; Claes Held; Emil Hagström; Bertil Lindahl; Mai-Lis Hellenius; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Coronary heart disease; Secondary prevention; Prevention; Periodontal Disease; Tooth loss; Risk prediction; Risk factors; Myocardial infarction; Kardiologi; Cardiology;

    Abstract : The purpose of this thesis was to assess the prevalence and management of established cardiovascular (CV) risk factors and the prevalence and influence of self-reported markers (number of teeth and frequency of gum bleeding) of periodontal disease (PD), a less explored CV risk factor, in patients with stable chronic coronary heart disease (CHD).We studied patients from the global STabilization of Atherosclerotic plaque By Initiation of darapLadIb TherapY (STABILITY) trial (n=15,828), in which patients with stable chronic CHD were randomized to either darapladib or placebo. 2. 2. Electrical remodeling in arial fibrillation - assessment using surface electrocardiograms, prognostic implications and potential reversal

    Author : Andreas Bollmann; Kardiologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; atrial fibrillation; electrocardiography; stroke; biomarkers;

    Abstract : The fibrillatory rate of the surface ECG during atrial fibrillation (AF) has been suggested for quantification of the individual atrial remodeling, to monitor interventions and to predict the response to different therapies. In this dissertation, the relation between fibrillatory rate of the surface ECG and (1) clinical and echocardiographic variables, (2) the outcome of cardioversion, (3) circulating markers of inflammation and hemostasis, (4) the risk of left atrial thrombus formation, (5) the risk of stroke, and (6) the effects of candesartan on the fibrillatory rate were investigated in human persistent atrial fibrillation (AF). 3. 3. Diabetes mellitus and acute coronary syndromes. Prognosis and risk factors

    Author : Ann-Marie Svensson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : diabetes; prognosis; hyperglycaemia; hypoglycaemia; risk-factors; morbidity; mortality; unstable coronary syndrome; unstable angina pectoris; acute myocardial infarction;

    Abstract : Aims: the aims of the thesis were: - To investigate the prognostic influence of diabetes on short- and long-term mortality after an episode of unstable coronary disease - To evaluate the association between glycometabolic parameters on admission and during hospitalization and the 2 year mortality risk among diabetic patients with unstable coronary disease - To investigate the influence of diabetes on treatment and outcome in patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) - To determine long-term morbidity and mortality after hospitalization for unstable coronary disease in patients with and without diabetes Diabetes was associated with higher mortality: We investigated an unselected series of 4,341 patients with unstable angina or non-Q-wave myocardial infarction, of which 722 (17%) had diabetes. Diabetes was associated with increased mortality during initial hospitalization (10. READ MORE

  4. 4. Risk Factors and Predictors of Heart Failure: from Incidence to Prognosis

    Author : Constantinos Ergatoudes; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; heart failure; prognosis; characteristics; risk factors; incidence; prediction;

    Abstract : Background: Heart failure (HF) is a major public health problem affecting at least 26 million people worldwide and one of the leading causes of disability and death. Aims: To identify characteristics associated with improved or worsened prognosis in patients with established HF and to study factors associated with higher risk for the incidence of HF in the general population. 5. 5. Platelet function and thrombin generation in ischemic stroke : clinical correlates and prognostic importance

    Author : Annika Lundström; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Platelet function is central to atherothombotic diseases and antiplatelet agents prevent non-cardioembolic ischemic stroke (IS). Individual differences in platelet reactivity may limit the response to antiplatelet treatment, leading to so-called high on-treatment platelet reactivity (HPR). READ MORE
