  1. 1. Smoking and T cell co-stimulation in rheumatoid arthritis

    Author : Caroline Wasén; Göteborgs universitet; Göteborgs universitet; Gothenburg University; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; rheumatoid arthritis; CD8 T cell; programmed cell death-1; programmed cell death-1 ligand 1; smoking; microRNA;

    Abstract : In this thesis I investigated if smoking limits the co-stimulatory system of CD8+ T cells in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). I took special interest in the co-inhibitory receptor PD-1 and its ligand PD-L1. READ MORE

    Abstract : Background: Squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck (SCCHN)comprises a large group of tumours including the oral cavity and nasopharyngealarea, and typically affects older males in association with alcohol/tobacco usage.Within the oral cavity, the mobile tongue is the most common site for tumourdevelopment. 3. 3. Modulation of invariant NKT cell activity by cytokines and receptors in human disease

    Author : Carlotta Kuylenstierna; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP;

    Abstract : Invariant natural killer T (NKT) cells are innate-like lymphocytes with both immunoregulatory and cytotoxic functions that play a role as activators and regulators of the immune response in many diseases. NKT cells are believed to bridge the innate and adaptive immune systems by rapidly producing large quantities of cytokines after recognition of CD1d-presented lipid antigens. READ MORE

  4. 4. Development requirements of neurotrophins in the mammalian nervous system

    Author : Wael M. Elshamy; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP;

    Abstract : The survival of the mammalian peripheral nervous system neurons has long been known to depend on neurotrophic factor support during the period of programmed cell death. In fact this was the original hypothesis, put forward after the discovery of the prototype, nerve growth factor (NGF). READ MORE

  5. 5. Genetic analysis of type 1 diabetes susceptibilty

    Author : Samina Asad; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP;

    Abstract : Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is a multifactorial disease where the pancreatic beta-cells are destroyed in an autoimmune attack. For the patients, this in turn leads to lifelong daily insulin treatment and increased risk for various kinds of complications. It is thought that both environmental as well as genetic factors act in concert to cause T1D. READ MORE
