1. Investigations of Strategies to Counteract Proinflammatory Cytokines in Experimental Type 1 Diabetes
Abstract : Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is a chronic autoimmune disease targeted against the pancreatic β-cells. Proinflammatory cytokines are considered to play a major role in the destruction of the insulin-producing β-cells. This thesis studied strategies to counteract proinflammatory cytokines in experimental T1D. READ MORE

2. Cytokines and immune balance in preeclampsia : a survey of some immunological variables and methods in the study of preeclampsia
Abstract : Preeclampsia is one of the most feared pregnancy complications, with a risk of maternal and fetal death and with no ideal therapy readily available. The cause of this strictly pregnancyrelated disease is still unknown and is therefore a great challenge to all researchers in the field of pregnancy-related pathophysiology. READ MORE

3. On inflammatory cytokines and β-amyloid peptides in acute and chronic neurodegeneration
Abstract : Insults to the brain as well as neurodegenerative diseases are known to elicit inflammatory responses. Inflammation in the brain can on one hand initiate processes that are harmful to the injured tissue and exacerbate the damage, leading to neuronal degeneration and glial activation, and on the other hand activate processes that may be necessary for repair mechanisms and regeneration. 4. Pathophysiological role and clinical relevance of cytokines in hypertensive heart failure. A combined clinical and experimental study
Abstract : Although mortality due to heart failure has decreased significantly in the last decade since the introduction of ACE-inhibitors and ?-adrenergic receptor blockers in the management of heart failure, chronic heart failure is still one of the most important causes of morbidity and mortality and has a very high frequency for readmission to hospitalization because of the aggravation of heart failure. This accounts for a significantly higher health-care expenditure that is twice as much the cost for cancer. READ MORE

5. Xenograft Rejection : A Study of Cytokine mRNA Expression in Experimental Models
Abstract : Acute cellular xenograft rejection of ICCs triggered mRNA expression of proinflammatory cytokines (IL-1b and TNF-a), Th1 associated cytokines (IL-12p40, IL-2 and IFN-g) and Th2 associated cytokines (IL-4 and IL-10). The peak values and the kinetics of the mRNA expression indicated that acute cellular xenograft rejection is enhanced by the proinflammatory response and mediated by the Th1 associated response, whereas the function of the Th2 associated response most likely is to counteract the Th1 associated cytokines and thereby inhibit bystander damage by the delayed type hypersensitivity like rejection process.
