1. Architectural Prototypes II : Reformations, Speculations and Strategies in the Digital Design Field
Abstract : This doctoral thesis is situated within the digital design field of architecture, and is a continuation of the licentiate thesis Architectural Prototypes: Modes of Design Development and Architectural Practice, presented at the KTH School of Architecture in 2008. The doctoral thesis investigates the current status of the digital design field of architecture, and identifies a number of related discourses. READ MORE

2. Rhine cities - urban flood integration (UFI) : German and Dutch adaptation and mitigation strategies
Abstract : Flood Risk Management along the Rhine today combines river expanding measures and adaptive strategies with the existing defensive system to cope with the risk increase as a consequence of previous interventions and developments and fluctuations in water levels due to climate change. Differences in landscapes and urgencies and differences in planning cultures between the Upper and Lower Rhine and the Delta have also led to different strategic approaches. READ MORE

3. Extreme environments - Design and human factors considerations
Abstract : The starting point of this research is based on my experience at SICSA performing research and design for extreme environments, including orbital and lunar planetary facilities, disaster shelters, polar stations and offshore surface and submersible habitats. This thesis explores what aspects and issues of design and planning processes in extreme environments have to be addressed in a similar way and therefore may be used as a basis for further work toward PhD thesis to develop a methodological planning tool or matrix. 4. In conversation with simulation: The application of numerical simulation to the design of structural nodal connections
Abstract : The thesis explores methods for integration of structural analysis, design and production in a digital design environment. The somewhat ambiguous title implies the ambition to make such integration in relation to the explorative phase of the design process which is described by Donald Schön as having a conversational character. 5. Repurposing brownfields as urban greenspace with gentle remediation options: A circular outlook
Abstract : Circular Economy (CE) is regarded as an efficient strategy to address the challenges arising from the linear ‘take-make-use-dispose’ system of exploitation of resources. Urban land and soil are among the most exploited resources wherein brownfields, the potentially contaminated and currently obsolete land, can be considered the waste of the linear land use system.
